30-30 on Moose... proof you don't always need a cannon?

Seen plenty of Norwegian Elg succumb to the 6,5x55 to understand that the calibre of the slug is less important than the competence of the user.
Indeed.

But also what is the distance of this shot, 50 or 60 meters, maybe a Little bit more?
At that point are we not talking a 30 cal 160 or 170 grn bullet traveling at something like 2000 fps ?
If the bullet is chosen correctly and the Hunters aim is true, Why shouldn't it do the job? 👍

And while we’re at it so to speak the 6.5 x 54 appears to make the grade as well?

@Rake Aboot

Have you thought about the 307 Winchester (yes 307)? Easily gets "deer weight" bullets (~150gr) to Scottish legal velocities..?

Comes in an 1894 AE so it can be conventionally scoped...

Scrummy

I love a good cannon but it's true, more often than not I use a big rifle because I want to rather than because I need to. I'd happily take roe with a .22 Hornet if it were legal. A .30-30 will kill most things.

I'd probably leave it at home if I was hunting animals that may want to eat me. For that I want a boomer, and the biggest one I can shoot straight! You'll not find me in the Canadian wilderness with anything smaller than a .30-06 and it'll more likely be a Whelen or .45-70. Last time I went the locals found it quite funny that I lugged a .375H&H with me everywhere I went. Someone mentioned bears - I don't like the sound of bears! :scared:

Do Winchester still make the .307 Winchester or has it been dropped?
For some reason I had it in my mind that the .307win 94 had been discontinued. I also wonder about the equivalent .308 Marlin, incidentally neither of which I have ever seen in this country though I have seen a couple of .375 Winchester rifles in the past.

I know of a 308marlin in this country that was for sale a short while ago……..(not mine)

I don't think Winchester are making the 307W currently though there has been some coverage of it in US press recently so you never know. (Winchester do seem to periodically do runs of "interesting" chamberings and models so never say never).

Think it's an interesting idea - like the 356W which is a 358W with a rim... could be a fun piggy gun...

What a .308 Marlin Express lever action not their bolt action rifle in .308win?
The .308 Marlin Express is rimmed or at least semi-rimmed just like the .307w is rimmed for use in lever action rifles.
