.308 Rifles

Hi guys,

I’m new to the forum and shooting centrefire but really keen to get more time on the range and upgrade my equipment. I am not stalking, and will only use this for range use.

At the moment I’m shooting my Rem 700 SPS and it does the job. I am happy with it but looking for something a bit nicer at the same time. I have my eyes on a Ruger Precision, quite a few owned by others in the club and I like the look of them.

My question is if I were to change my Remington for the Ruger would I lose anything due to the change of barrel length. I’d go from 26’ to 20’. I’d ask others in the club but they all have theirs in 6.5 (I realise the 6.5 is a better choice for target but the majority of my experience is 22LR and I enjoy the recoil of the .308).

Thanks for any advice.
Have had a Ruger precision in .308 with 20”. It’s probably the most accurate rifle I’ve ever owned and shot. A lot of the guys at the range really complimented it. Shot out to 1000

I’d definitely recommend the T3 TAC A1 over the Ruger. Build quality is sooooo much better.
I have the Tac A1 in .308 that Long_range_rob mentioned above, 20inch barrel and it loves 123gr sako factory (sub MOA) at one extreme up to 168gr TTSX's also factory sako that shoot 0.4 moa and change..... its a lovely gun but i'm pretty sure its the same action in the UPR and CTR although I'm waiting on confirmation from Tikka that they are interchangeable. The other little joy of using a .308 is that you can load subsonic loads for it....... folks at the range love a subsonic silenced .308!

I toyed with this very issue. I had a 700 shot out .308 in a sps stock. Was trying to decide custom rifle build with it or buy the RPR.. my local dealer made it harder by offering me £100 off retail for the RPR.

I went custom… bought an Oryx stock for £300 from here, had a new custom 30” barrel fitted (with brake £805) stuck a VortexVenom 5-25x56 on it (£325) and recently a Timney trigger (100) so for a total of 1530 I have a fully custom scoped rifle that will shoot 1/3 moa groups for £300-500 less than just an RPR no scope. I love that rifle accurate as hell and great fun to shoot. With it being fully custom the barrel (heavy heavy profile) balances perfectly for PRS without additional weights etc.

I’ve got a 20” SPS tac in an AICS stock and it’s produced the best group I’ve ever shot. It loves 168 SMK’s being driven relatively sedately, some of my Lapua brass had been loaded 10 times plus with no signs of slowing down.
It is however nowhere near as slippy as a 6.5 and you notice that when it’s windy but it’s still very effective at 500 yards or so.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Remmy, there are just so many upgrade options. Having said that I also like my AX in 20” .308 too when it’s not wearing its 6.5 barrel!

I have an Oryx stocked Howa and have seen many reviews of Remington 700s reequipped with them. I like mine, and every review I've seen of the 700 + Oryx combination has been positive. When first introduced at the 399 USD RRP, same in pounds here, and available on sale prices for a year or two at around £350, they were probably the easiest / cheapest was to make a real upgrade to such rifles. The only seeming downside to the Oryx is the top of the buttstock partially getting in the way of a cleaning rod. (Get a carbon fibre rod and no more problem!) Heavy too, but whilst a downside on a stalking rifle, that's a plus on one only used for target work.

I'd rate your approach to the issue as eminently sensible, and am delighted it turned out so well for you. For many though, doing up the inherently sound R700 is always going to be inferior / boring compared to owning the new / 'in' thing and they'll pay a premium for such. I've known Dave Wylde of Valkyrie Rifles for many years who cut his gunsmithing teeth on building very, very good Remington 700 based rifles, and although most of his work now involves far more expensive 'sexier' actions in the commissions he receives, he still rates the R700 as a sound basis for a high-precision custom build.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input on this. One thing failed to mention in the original post was that I already have it sitting in an AI stock which is a great addition to the rifle.

After reading everyone’s post, I think I’m going to stick with the Rem. I the like the Ruger but I think my Rem certainly does the job and I love the military look it has in its AT stock. I think moving forward I will fit a custom trigger (probably Timney or Cadex) and put some better glass on top - no doubt something 5-25x.
