.308 to big for foxing?

im think of getting a 308 for foxing and some deer is it to big and why?

You only get one kind of dead and a 308 more than fits the bill but Northumbria won't allocate 308 for fox.

I suppose the issue is that it is a pretty meaty round and I suspect it takes the animal apart through energy rather than bullet expansion. With that in mind you need to make sure you have a good backstop cos the fox wont slow the bullet down much!!

Whilst I agree with the posts here. We must remember that plod may very well, not grant a 308 for foxing as most foxing is done during darkness. As already stated central scotland wont give a 308 unless the ground has Red on it, and tayside are much the same. Im not sure how the southern plods are though due to the differences in firearm law.

I sorted a .308 out for a guy from stathclyde with a letter stating that for the shooting of reds on my ground all guests must use a rifle with a muzzle energy comparable to a .308, sorted.

You only need to have access to reds not your own permission with them so if you have an invite or are a paying guest which letter of confirmation can be provided it's just a formality.

308 is the best, a proper mans calibre

What about any other deer species? If they don't then it's a deer legal round so why any differential?

It seems that the centrals don't like 30 cals and will try and hold you to .243 'because it is deer legal for all species' but I suspect it is to do with the population densities of the region and the 'risks' of higher energy calibres in proximity to population centres. The buck stops with the police after all to ensure public safety.

This is all about individual choice. Used exclusively for foxing a 308 isn’t the best choice, it you have one for deer and see a fox it will do a good job. The issue the police might be concerned with is safety and if you are shooting deer ok with a 308, the ballistics are the same when you shoot a fox so does the quarry matter?
