Disclaimer (for those who need it)

This is a totally unscientific trial carried out because it’s cold and wet out, I’m bored and it seems fun. It is not a recommendation in any shape or form.

Bullets : Lee mold C309-150-F round nose, flat base (bought for 30 30) cast from same lead as I use in my .38.

Primers: Large pistol (probably) found in a small unlabelled plastic bag in the back of my ammo cupboard.

Powder: Bullseye

Cases: various.

Barrel : 24” slugged at .308

I'm not sure if this proves anything. They seemed to stay quite constant after 4.5gn and I didn't go higher than 5.5. It was noticeably louder above 4.5gn. The 3.5 were very quiet.
I didn't tap the powder forward or back before firing so maybe that would change things.

My advice is to do your homework and as with all monolith rounds, beware of a serious risk of ricochet.
After reading extensively on loading Sub Sonic, I did as most suggested and worked down rather than working up in powder weight.
I have been playing with sub sonic .308 for a while now.
I read the .308 Sub Sonic article by Barton Gun Works. It is a very interesting read and useful.
I looked at pistol powders. Burn rate and grains per Litre, looking for the max volume to weight. Trying to maximise case fill.
I wanted N320, however settled on N330 as it was available.
All loads were tested (checking for signs of tumbling) without a mod fitted in the first instance.
.308 M12 Mauser
20 inch barrel
1/11 twist
No modifications were carried out on the PPU case.
CCI large primer
Hornady 190grn Sub X
Started at 10.5 grn N330
worked down, too 8grn N330 In .5grn decrease.
All loads proved safe.
Loads above 9.5grns were super sonic
Loads 9grn and under were Sub Sonic.
8grns loads were very quiet at 940fps
8grns Zeroed at 50m were accurate <3/4 inch, when used with my Hik HD LRF Balistic holdover, Howerver, I had to play with the the MV in the balistic calculator. Once sorted, the round proved accurate using the holdover provided, out to 134m, 134m being the maximum distance available at the time.
I'm not quite sure what use I could make of this round for hunting, however it has been interesting.

Sound advice. Like you I have no real use for this load. I have lots of 22rf rifles, a 223 and even 357mag cleared for land but not the 308 which is a target rifle (Unique Alpine TPG1) It was really just something to do on this dark and stormy day!

I have several rifles, .204. .243, .308 centrefires, plus .17hmr and .22lrs. no target rifles. All with open conditions.
I enjoy shooting paper. I'm lucky to have plenty of ground some suitable for playing at long rrange. Living in the Brecon Beacons has its advantages.

Really interesting info , thank you. I also am tempted to try this, but have no sensible reason for doing so and i have plenty of rifles so have most options covered ! I am also just curious
Could it be used for night time rabbits?
I presumed a 190gn bullet would allow more flexibility for case volume issues. Would it also have a terrible trajectory? Or similar to a sub .22 rimfire. Presumably its going around the same speed?
What sort of accuracy could you get at 100 ?

I've used red dot, herco and a2400 in 308 and 30-30.
6gn of red dot in 30-30 is around the sound barrier depending on bullet. Shooting pointy bullets backwards is ok too .
