35 Remington

I was thinking along the same lines - Marlin XL7, Winchester XPR, Ruger American...

Yes, and you can add:

Savage Axis, Mossberg Patriot, Howa, whatever the Remington that looks like a knockoff T3 is.

But, apart from the fact that half of them don't offer a left hand bolt, my answer remains the same. They would undoubtably be accurate and functional as "tubes; bullet delivery (rifled)", but my perceived joy of ownership would be pretty low....

If you're still shopping for something to suit a lefty, you might want to read up on, and look at some model 99 Savages ... an early lever design well ahead of its time, and considered to be classic deer guns by those who fancy them ( and even by some who do not).

Though out of manufacture for a few decade now, the 99s have a strong following by firearms and hunting enthusiasts who prefer walnut, blued steel, and hand crafted quality, all in an easy to carry, reliable and accurate rifle. 99s can be found in a good array of chamberings, quite commonly, but definitely not limited to, 30-30, .308, and Savages own cartridges, the 300 (close and older cousin to the .308W) and the 250 Savage.
I have about a half dozen 99s, the oldest, a "250-3000" manufactured in 1915. The "3000" comes from the fact, that it would push an 87 grain to, at that time, the unbelievable velocity of 3000 fps). It's still a fine rifle, and an effective deer cartridge at 100+ years old.

Most definitely a rifle on my radar! The 30-30 and 303 savage are a little anemic for my taste, although both undoubtably fine cartridges for deer.

Issues against the 99 though have been:

Price (they seem to command a premium ranging from slight to ridiculously high).

Sights, most are drilled and tapped for a scope. Many of the affordable ones aren't.

The safety. Most of the ones I could afford have the pre-tang lever safety, which is horrid. Literaly I think the worst safety I have ever encountered as a lefty.

LOP. Were hunters 100 years ago all short armed? All of the ones I've looked at have been so short that if I was shooting with a scope it would be hitting me in the face.

Seriously, I'd love a 99 in 300 or 308. Maybe one day I'll get the action of a later 308 model and rebarrel it to 7-08.....

Whilst that is unquestionably a cool idea, were I to follow a similar path I would actually look to be rechambering a 30 cal to the 7.62x54r

LHG...a question? If the donor is .308 WCF then why not just get a rim turned on the chamber and have a .307 Winchester?

No not short arms but just plain bloody short! Every shot gun I've ever bought I've had to re-stock or stick a rubber pad on it. I sometimes envy those that can buy a shot gun "as is" and be done with the matter.

Good idea, but if I was looking at a 308 win I'leave it alone and take it hunting.

I've actually come to an arrangement on a 336 in 35.... Should come to fruition in the next couple of weeks. As ever, when trying to do all this stuff on a shoestring, it takes time!
