I have a Nissan Navara and am thinking of getting a bit smaller for shooting, still needs to be 4x4, any recommendations please

I’m a Defender man all day long but have heard and read some great reports on the usefulness of the Suzuki Jimny, I’d be looking at one of those.

Worlds your oyster. Jimny? Freelander? New land cruiser? Are you using it hard off road or not?

Do you need an actual 4x4 or are you happy with the performance off road the Navara gives you? Edit - I ask because there aren't many true 4x4 vehicles from factory, I can only think of a handful

Depends how off road you need to go and what you need to carry about. I have a 2011 Toyota Rav diesel and it does me fine for driving on hill roads and across fields etc, but never tested it in a mud bath. I'm looking for another one (one of the the last before they went hybrid), but from down south, as the amount of road salt the council uses up here means motors rust for fun underneath. Anyway, that's an aside, we've had 2 Ravs already and they have been comfortable, reliable and reasonably economical, compared to bigger 4x4s/pickups.

Avoid the RR products with the Ingenium engine. In fact, I think the Ford ranger has it as well. Googol issues and see for yourself.
In fact, I would avoid anything Landrover. Their reputation is awful on reliability. Even the newer ones, Which is a shame as I would love one.
Land cruisers and Grenadiers are supposedly very good off road but not so comfortable on road. Depends on how much ground clearance you need and how much of the muddy stuff you need to go through.

There does seem to be less and less real off roaders that are reliable.

Good options if you go 4x4 estate car, Subaru have some good options. That way you get good on road performance and comfort

I have a 2018 2 litre Impreza and am very happy with it except that the ground clearance is like a normal car the XV version is the same vehicle body but higher of the ground as the Foresters suspension is fitted.

It’s not small, but I have a diesel Mitsubishi outlander (diesel, not the more common hybrid) and it is a good solution for a car that spends most of its time on the road but can also drive across a field - 4x4, ok ground clearance, and low range gears, but also does 40mpg on the motorway.

If you go for a Jimny, buy the car & remove the rear seats yourself, If you buy the one already "Commercialised" the dreaded will apply.
From something I read this week the Jimny won't be available in the UK apart from the commercial version as of this year due to the emissions.

Oooh, I just remembered, I had a Mitsubishi Pajero IO (I think they were sold in the UK as Pinins) for a couple of years when I lived abroad. Very similar size to a Jimny and very very capable off road. Totally converted me from my love of landrovers.

Over the years I’ve had Range Rover, Freelander, Shogun, Subaru Forester and Legacy, Hilux Surf and two RAV4’s the 3 door got me all round Europe but the 5 door I’ve had for 5 yrs and it’s all I need as I shoot mainly alone with one lab unless my son joins me.
It’s never let me down and perfect for all my needs even off road why I do a lot of foxing and rabbits and Toyota don’t let you down
Main question when buying a 4x4 is what it’s gonna be used for, towing? Lots of dogs and deer equipment etc so work out what you need to carry and look at the appropriate models
Some of my farmers getting very precious over big 4x4s on their land now so another reason the RAV4 2L Automatic does the job for me, or the Jimmy, Honda CV
