6.5 creedmoor primer

Any major difference using a small primer compared to large primer.
I know you shouldn’t make a load development then swap the size of primer.
I have rounds to use which are large primer, just checking if it’s better with small for any reason.
Primarily hunting round but will be using at the range.

SRP don't work with some rifles as the firing pin it to large. Cratered and blown primers can be an issue.

SRP, can have significant problems with igniting large cases such as the 6 and 6.5 CM. Usually a SMRP will resolve ignition issues.

That being said, this is physics, and there is no free lunch. The smaller ignition source does give more uniformed ignition when hot enough, as well as the case is stronger due to more brass in the case head. But, velocities in some cases are actually lower with SRP (Mag or otherwise) with the same powder charges.

I just saw this with one of our club members, as he just switched to a 6 CM...

I have both SRP and LPR Peterson 6.5CM Bass I loaded them both with the same amount of powder, and shot them at 900yards. I couldnt tell the difference. The issue was when it came to reloading the cases and I forgot i had a mixture!

Lapua are now making large primer brass for the creedmoor.

@Laurie has done extensive testing with large and small primers.

When temperatures drop the small primers struggle with the higher weight loads and can cause hang fire.
They struggle with light loads in cold weather

Has anyone actually tested to see if the British weather is extreme enough to affect a small rifle primer in a Creedmoor load? I've heard numerous things about the cold weather causing problems but the only anecdotal evidence is from some forums where people are shooting in proper extremes of -20°C.

My load development was done in about -2°C and I never had a single issue and that was with Ramshot Hunter, a ball powder supposedly more difficult to ignite.

We only get down to just above 0* C here, and we saw issues with SRP ammo in the cold, not igniting properly. A lot of sooty cases, with erratic amounts of soot. Some all the way back to the case head, some just to the shoulder. Pretty obvious that ignition was an issue, even if the SD numbers were still good...

Going to get large primer brass now

So i use Srp brass. Was load testing last week and never had any issues. The ground was frozen all day. Ammo was out in the cold as well. Never missed a beat.
Is most of this issue with people in America? Seems like that's where most of the talk and you tube stuff comes from.
Is any one in the UK having these issues?
