6.5 PRC ultimate build

I’m looking at building a custom 6.5 PRC very soon and I’m looking for a bit off advice and maybe someone who’s got a very good reputation to build the rifle for me if there are any recommendations??

Spec will be as followed

Defiance action (from what I read there seems to be a debate between a short or long action . But I’d assume a short action would be better ? What are the pros and cons off each as I believe defiance offer both for the 6.5 PRC) I hear the long will feed better but the short would have slightly better accuracy ??

A bartlein or Krieger barrel 26” (best available barrel for target) I hear a heavy countour barrel ?

2 stage trigger (the best on the market)

An MDT ACC stock (with full weight kits inside and out) .

MDT elite break or lancer viper break .

This will obviously mainly be a target rifle with some hunting involved also .

If anyone has any ideas please feel free what trigger or maybe a better option for me ?

6.5 PRC is essential . I’m aware I’ll get people saying not to use the round and to use ones that have been around for longer however I believe the 6.5 PRC will be here for the long haul and it does everything I want it too .

So far I’ve messaged Steve kershaw as I hear very good things about him but I haven’t had a response . I assume due to the time off year

All the best !

Defiance do a medium action which would be high on my list but you would have to see who has them in UK.
Your reamer and bullet of choice would make a difference to how cramped you will be in a short action.
With your components list being a US I assume you have done your research.
What are American competitive shooters using for their PRC rifles? They have been shooting them longest so look for advice there. Not much experience over here yet.

Speak to Paddy Dane. He builds a bad ass rifle and has most of the components on your list.
He built this 6.5 4s for me on a short action and I have no issues with 140grn bullets.IMG_20201117_075619449.webp

Lovely rifle mate !

I’ve never handled a defiance action, but I’m on the look out for a custom action with a bolt that locks closed. Defiance offer a 3 position safety, but the machined in rail doesn’t appeal to me. Personally, I’d want the option to change the rail if need be. That may be worth considering.

I’ve got 1 x bighorn TL3 action and 1 x bighorn SR3 action, they are well worth a look if you haven’t considered them. Pre-fit barrels are available if that’s your thing and they are pretty slick. The floating bolt head supposedly improves accuracy as well. Not sure if that’s true, but both rifles shoot.

The one thing I don’t like about them for a stalking rifle is that I’ve unknowingly knocked the bolt open a few times. I’ve spoken to the manufacturer though and they are working on a retro fit 3 position safety bolt shroud. This isn’t much of a problem for a comp or highseat rifle though

If I had to pick a dream build list it would be;
Bighorn TL3 action
Proof or Bartlein barrel
Triggertech trigger
One of Manners’ PRS style stock offerings with chassis
American rifle company 10 round mag
Area 419 arca rail
Area 419 muzzle

The best advice I can give is try handle everything before you commit if possible. I liked the look of the MDT ACC. I handled one a couple of weeks back and would still put a manners top of the list, for me.

As for the barrel, I’ve got carbon wrapped proof and all steel bartlein. I can’t work out what’s better. I’m not sure if the carbon insulates the heat or dissipates it. The carbon has stayed surprisingly “cool” compared to all steel.

The downside of any build with popular American components is wait time. I’d imagine it’s much easier to get hold of a MDT stock and bartlein barrel in the U.K. compared to a manners stock and proof barrel. There are no doubt big horns on the shelf as well

I’ll throw Neil McKillop’s name in to the hat. He’s normally got a good stock of barrels

Hi Chris, as Jax, and trucraft have said, before you start spendi g your cash , do your homework and if you can go look at the products you want to buy for your next build , Mick Mak, and paddy has good stock. Actions, tubes , triggers, stocks. Think about finished weight of rifle when all finished , stock , scope , tube mod , can, rings, barell. You have to lug it about varminting. Im going down the 6mm Prc route in a varminting profile. Here is my new stick built by Mick Mack, BAT Tr and Aw mags. .22 DASHER soon to be 6mmPRC

You’ve pretty much matched my second choice , I think it’s preference really . Granted I haven’t seen a manners however they are my second choice it’s just their apperantly very hard to get . However I do like the ACC a lot . Actions , I was debating the bighorn it’s just again the defiance I like just a little bit more

Think I waited the best part of 18 months, if not 24 for the manners. Paddy Dane may be worth a call

ive owned mdt LSS, McMillans and offerings from closer to home. Manners are worth the wait, but it literally comes down to personal preference. It’s hard to get hands on though, especially at the moment.

It's very hard when you can't get hands on kit that's on your wish list.
Stocks particularly. Not ideal time but worth going to some PRS style comps and handling some hardware to get best idea of what works. Especially when you're going to be throwing well over £1000 at a stock and probably several months wait.
Definitely check out these TCS from Manners.😍
