6.5CM + 129gr interlock story

So I have been really happy so far with my Schultz and Larson 6.5 Creedmoor and my budget friendly Hornady 129gr American whitetail.

The combination has taken everything very effectively from muntjack to sika stags without a single runner.

That was until I went to Exmoor last weekend. By all accounts, a very successful trip. Taking Home a youngster for the freezer and and a trophy for the wall. Plus leaving two big stag carcasses for the keeper to sell to the game dealer. 160lbs and 180lbs

So my first big Red, we were tramping through one of the pheasant pens to get to a vantage point And straight ahead of me there is a stag that had already dropped his antlers. Headshot instant humane kill as I had come to expect.

My second deer, we spotted from quite a way away and we had to do a huge loop on foot to get the right side of the wind and to get to a suitable distance. 225meters chest shot, goes down like a sack of potatoes. Lays there for awhile then starts to get up. I think about putting another one in it and our keeper says don’t worry he’s hit hard. He’ll stumble out for a bit and fall over… he trots off into a nearby Wood.
So A forced March back to The Kabota and then two hours of searching around to no avail! We are just about to give up And make a phone call to a man with a dog when we see something on the thermal not 25 m in front of us. It’s the stag and it’s not moving just standing there. I zapped him in the heart and he fell straight over.

On Close inspection we found the original projectile just under the skin on the entrance side. The bullet had hit a rib and stopped!!! if it had passed through the rib, it would have been a lung shot.

After the Gralloch, we could see that the first shot had cracked the rib clean in half but had not passed through. The second shot was clearly 2 inches further forward and had done done the business.

Went out a second night specifically to find something for the freezer and there was so many to choose from. We were able to hike across from heather and into a field with long grass. A short crawl to a good prone shooting position. 250m across a valley in a position with easy access for recovery, job done.

Although a fabulous trip I’m never trying to shoot a big Exmoor red with this gun/projectile combination. 7prc incoming!IMG_3111.webp2B722E89-EEA8-4BDC-9B8C-D300226824D1.webpIMG_3112.webp5cb83ca2-5572-4df4-bb06-35274a237bd7.webpIMG_3142.webp

we all get deer running it just happens , seen things run that should not be able to , lots of things cause it and sometimes its hard to get your head into " how the heck the beast took more than two steps at the most "

Good write up and shocked to see that bullet stopped by a rib. Your thoughts of putting a second bullet into him were well founded.

As 75 says those are pretty modest carcass weights for that neck of the woods. Last time I was at Kellys dropping off some fallow the 2 red stags I saw go over the scales were 123kg and 143 kg so 270 and 315 lbs.

Whilst I'd consider both of those long shots personally, a 129gn bonded bullet out of a 6.5CM is more than capable at those ranges; those aren't big deer - 160lb is what the hinds run to around here. I think you've been very unlucky.
180lbs carcass weight is pretty lumpy I thought.

And I agree that I and everyone I’ve spoken to find this very strange!

I don’t think that the interlocks Are bonded, just a simple mechanical lock cup and core bullet.

Oh wow! I wouldn’t want to recover those solo!!!

On this ground you are almost always shooting across a valley. The valley sides are very steep. 200m is almost a minimum unless you bump into something by accident.

180lbs is 80kgs give or take. The hinds around here (Derbyshire) can run to that. Stags here pre rut are often 120-140kgs (265-310lbs). Largest I've had was about 335lbs.

So no one will argue 180lbs isn't lumpy but it's pretty small for a lowland stag.
Well it was still a struggle getting them into the trailer!

Absolutely fabulous weekend though! Shame its almost over for another year.

I wonder what the outcome would if been if you were using a 143eldx? Ive often wondered how the 2 compare on heart/lung shots...any experiences welcome!

Great write-up though and at least you found him 👍🏻

Indeed had a hind and stag calf a couple weeks back that ran to 83 kg and 60 kg respectively

I reckon the extra weight and better bullet design would have made the difference and it would have gone through the rib into the vitals. 6.5cm and ELDX is a pretty proven paring.

I guess the thing that surprised the most is that after inspection is it wasn’t actually a fatal wound.

I’m going to try the 100gr ELD-VT in my Creedmoor next for the smaller species. It looks interesting on paper. Very high BC for the weight and 3300fps+. For piece of mind on anything larger I’ll use the 7prc from now on.

I used to use 129gr American Whitetail alongside 120gr Outfitter CX before we went fully copper as, fortunately, they used to shoot within half inch of each other. Might be worth trying 120gr Outfitter CX?
