6.5x47 Lap

Hi does anyone have any practical experience of this cartridge for stalking? I know it is a very accurate round but it doesnt seem to be widely used in stalking.
What sort of bullet weight are you using and how do they perform on the various species?

cheers.

I have to disagree with you about propensity of use.

I know perhaps 8 stalkers near to me that use this calibre on roe, fallow and red deer.

Most if not all use, 129SST, some use Berger 130's and one guy uses 120g Sierra Prohunters.

I have a 6.5x47 myself although it is a target rifle, I do not use it on deer - ive other cannons for that...

Ive also built a few rifles in this calibre for mixed fox/deer control but cannot say what bullets these guys use that have the rifles.

Its very popular in Cumbria, NW / NE.

Hi i use a 6.5 x 47 with 120 grain nosler bt and find it a superb round, i obviously home load this round with reloader 15 powder and federal gold match primers and have been really happy with this round for deer. :)

Hi ive just had a 6.5x47 built havent used it much but seems very accurate .2 with 95 grain v max .3 with 120 grainers.i use RL15, cci br4 primers. it has a 1-9 twist shilen barrel on it. hope this helps

best calibre

I use 6.5x47 on all species, its a fantastic round, pay once cry once!!!!
go and get one built!!!
it will shoot 95 v maxes/ 120g mk around 3000fps
less than 3" drop at 200yds
bloody awesome

I was talking to a buddy about this round only yesterday. He is very big into ballistics and long range shooting as well as stalking and he reckons this round is the dogs b*ll*cks.

Super flat, highly accurate, almost no recoil with a mod, and a 120grn round more or less copes with everything except boar in this country.

He's completely sold on it. The only issue at the moment is lack of choice and general availability of ammo.

Here's an example of his credentials for making this statement. It's not taken with this particular round but shows that he knows what he's talking about.

While it is a excellent well balanced and efficient round and I would consider one myself (a good friend of mine has 1) it is not really “super flat” shooting, :???: they are more than a few “standard” stalking calibres that shoot flatter at normal stalking ranges.

At the end of the day it is a cut down 243/308/260 case with a small primer added, less powder means less velocity all other things being equal. I don't mean to slag this calibre off, just keep things in prospective.

As Thar says, others will do nice flat shooting, My recent weekend in Scotland on Griff's long range shoot produced some startling shots from stalker's rifles, mine included, .270Win 130gn partitions, 600yds for clays on stakes, Roe sized rocks out at 1000 yds. 7mm WSM chucking 162grain A max did nicely too. :)

I personally wouldn't have a rifle chambered for it because the brass is so expensive! I tend to forget to pick up brass after I've taken a shot at deer, mind you at 70p+ each I might be inclined not to!

I can't see the 260 being much worse accuracy wise: by the time you've had a custom barrel installed properly for either, I can't imagine there'd be much in it.

I've got a slot for a 260 barrel, when I get round to getting one, I'll be turning down once fired 308 brass: I bought 1000 for £80, that's basically a 10th of price!

The expensive brass debate is quite amusing;

70p for the case.

30p for the bullet

30p for the powder and sub .1p for the primer.

Roe doe game dealer weight - 40lbs (average) = £40

Red Hind - dealer weight - 65 - 90lbs - circa £80

Hmm, not bad return for wasting 70p of brass (if you dont pick it up)

Not attempting to be "funny" or picking a fight, just fail to see where your coming from with the cost of brass argument.

As an aside, I always attempt to pick up my spent cases especially when stalking - you never know what may tread on them and get it stuck in their hooves.

I'm a member of a syndicate, so I don't get paid per carcase, so there is no money to be made there.

Also, I do a bit of target shooting, I need around 100 rounds for a session, and I need more than one batch.

I'm not quite sure where you get 30p for powder: I paid about £58 per Kg and I get about 350 out of that makes about 16.5p and 0.1p for a primer? Surely more like 2-3p?

The way I see it, 1000 rounds costs about £165 for powder, £250 for bullets, £25 for primers, a total of £440, so add in £70 for brass (assuming that a case can be reloaded 10 times), that's an increase of 16%. I personally think that's significant.

For purely stalking, then If I only needed the onebox of brass and it lasted, then I wouldn't be so worried. £70 for enough brass to last a few years wouldn't be too bad and insignificant compared with other stalking costs!

If it works for you, then fine! Just stating my view :-D

my estimates were typed too fast!

Hear what you say and understand reasons, I understand not all seel carcass's.

Its a good round for deer, I have it for target not deer but know six maybe seven guys that use it in my area on red and roe to good effect.

Personaly, I prefer 260 or 6.5x284 as they allow the use of 140's.

(Although I am pretty sure the deer know no difference)
