6mm BR

Just a general question to people on here who are more experienced in these things, than me....

I have a 6mm BR and was wondering if it would be suitable for fox and maybe smaller deer, varminting etc?

Having only shot competitively in the past, I was wanting to explore the possibilities of gaining a permission (I do realise that's not going to be easy) and possibly going on a paid stalk.

If someone could offer up an experienced opinion, I would be grateful.

Absolutely. Legal for all species when loaded over 1700 ftLb's. You will get there with a 90 grain AB at 3000 fps which is fairly hot but very doable. Personally I would only use it up to Fallow, but many would use it on Red, especially hinds. Put it in the right place and it will work. And putting it in the right place with a 6BR shouldn't be difficult. I run a 22BR on Fox and it's stunningly accurate.
 
i have and have used my current 6mmbr on minty.roe,sika and 1 fallow,

1/9 twist 25” barrel 95 gr soft point, no bother,

dont use it much now, but it’s a stunning calibre, i do fancy a 22 br and have the slot, but i am not shooting much now so stick to foxing and vermin control.

Sorry to be a pedant, but, 1700 ft lbs, nor 90 grain bullet legal in Scotland for all species.

You made a blanket statement. Inexperienced shooters could be misled by that. Just because he doesn’t live in Scotland, doesn't mean he won’t go to Scotland to deer stalk!
And, you need a dictionary if you think i spelt PEDANT wrongly. You obviously didn’t know the word PEDANT.

You also can’t use the 6mm BR in the USA f you have under a 16” barrel. There you go Kenbro, clarified it as we don’t want to mislead now do we. The OP could be shooting small deer in the US, he did say “varminting” after all.

A bit misleading, that statement, Jim. Or, have they recently banned pistols in America?

They have not, it’s fair to assume the OP isn’t discussing hunting with handguns as that’s not possible here.

That being said, you proved my point. One has to draw sensible conclusions sooner or later. For example, the OP is likely to not be hunting with a handgun and since he made no mention of Scotland it is fair to make the presumption he is hunting in his local area. Alternatively keep dreaming up alternative scenarios.

Anyway, this thread has been derailed enough. Pengo, NigelM’s advice is very sound and mirrors the experience of a close friend who uses 6mm BR. 6mm’s are excellent double duty cartridges usually and is why they’re popular, however everything has a downside and the 6mm’s aren’t ideal for larger deer. That’s not to say they won’t work mind. For small deer as you mentioned, it’ll perform great.

Make your mind up. “Op not likely to shoot in Scotland because he lives in England”, yet, “he could be shooting small deer in the US.” You also seem to think small deer are varmints in America!
As for “You can’t use the 6mmBR in the USA if you have under a 16” barrel. Utter bulldust.

Entirely my point, however I’m either not being clear or you’re deliberately missing it. The OP mentioned varmints in his post, an American term. Either way, as I said it’s been derailed enough.
You do whatever makes you happy.

I think I might look for a trip over to the Norfolk area in the New Year to try for an accompanied stalk over there, which would be a good starting point, in my opinion.

I believe it's better to gain experience first , so I can at least have something to offer a potential permission holder.

deadly accurate calibre, i have taken most of the munty with head and neck shots to try and save as much of the meat as possible as i only took one now and again as i am the only one who eats it in the family,

Sorry if I've caused an issue, but thank you for your input, it's very much appreciated; and in terms of stalking, it would be small deer on a paid accompanied stalk, but primarily, it would be Varminting (not sure the English terminology), such as Fox and some longer range crow, rabbit etc.

Pengo, don't apologise, not your issue.

Jim and Bob have a great deal of experience. You will be fine with the 6BR as long as you load it with well constructed bullets and don't ask it to do more than it's capable of. The head start you have is that it is inherently an exceptionally accurate chambering so you should be placing the bullets where they should go. Get yourself over to Norfolk with an experienced stalker and enjoy this great past time we are all privileged to be involved in.

Honestly you didn’t cause an issue at all.
Would you be using your current 6BR or is too target oriented/heavy for shooting quarry? I’d love to see it if you have any phots?
 
Handbags aside....
th 6BR is just a smaller cased, but much more efficient .243
matches .243 velocities from 30gr of powder rather than 40+gr

you wont need to chase velocities
the lighter recoil and naturally accurate cartridge is a joy to shoot.

dont believe everything you read about what rifle will feed the stubby little case and what ones won't
test them in 243 derivation to confirm.


i wanted a sako 75 and foolishly listened when I was told it simply wouldn't work.
after testing it with some dummy rounds I was kicking myself!


I have a Sako 591 waiting to be rebarrelled into a 6BR, makes for a great lightweight "all deer" shorter
run a decent quality bullet and you will have no issues knocking over anything
