7mm 08 Shortest Barrel length??

MS, an 18” 7mm-08 using R15 or IMR 3031 and 120gr Sierra Pro Hunter. The one I used (a Kimber 84M Montana, cut down to 18") grouped a 1/3" group (at least) at 100y and under 1" at 200y - not bad!

Before this 7mm-08 project there was an experiment with a 16” barrelled 308 however on Reds it lost too much energy / velocity and I did find at distance over 150 yards penetration was not as expected hence the 7mm-08 at 18” which sort of correlates to ‘Southerns’ view, I think (?!).

Personally for short range work in the woods I would still use 140 gr bullets, slightly slower and less meat damage but would revert to the 120’s for longer stuff. The 120’s have shot plenty of Reds in mine.

Ping me your email address and I will send you an article on this (it won't fit on here).

MS - just seen your bit about the moderator. Did you see my Hardy Gen 4 on the 6.5? That on a a short barrel would help being ultra light and over barrel type. You're welcome to try it.

Sorry to hear about the fall. Fractured ribs are a bi-ch. I am glad you got out with it some more. I am beginning to think mine is going to top my all time favorite hunting rifle. I also have gravitated to the 120's. Fast and hard hitting. The local Trading Post got in the full line of IMR's new "Enduron" powders and I was eyeballing IMR 4166 for the 7-08/120 grain combo as it is supposed to be a clone of Varget. Data shows it to be almost identical in charge weights and more importantly, pressures, giving equal velocities -but at $36.95 a pound I think I'll use up my existing six or seven pounds of proven Varget before I start down that path. (I shoot my 7mm-08 loads between 90F and -25 f. I don't see a lot of powder sensitivity using Varget.) Should Varget dry up completely, I may give it a look.~Muir

Use your Varget advisedly Muir , word here is that it along with other ADI powders, will become very scarce here this year , I have it on VG authority that something is afoot ! Secret Squirrel tells me that there is likely to be some major moves within Thales ( ADI ) by the end of 2015.
As for prices, Varget ( 2208 ) is currently selling for $49.00/500grams and we make the stuff! I just laid in 15lbs of RL17 $228.00/5 pounds, N135 is $125.00 per kilo if you can get it.

I have pretty much written off the resurgence of Varget into the market. It's a trickle here, at best. I have seven pounds of it and use it only in 7-08. For 308 I find IMR 4064 just as accurate so I've switched for good.~Muir

I'm currently looking at getting a lightweight compact 'woodland stalker' rifle built for small woodlands and high seats which I seem to be doing more of lately. I like the look of the 7mm 08 for this but I'm wondering just how short I can go with the barrel length? I've considered the RPA one which has only a 16" barrel  but it is extremely heavy!
Could a 7mm 08 cope with a 16" barrel? It does seem rather short! I've read that this calibre is rather suited to shorter light weight rifles. Any thoughts or experiences welcomed!

16" Barrel on Remington 700 7mm-08 works a treat.
