LOOK. stop saying the 7-08 should be more popular. We need to keep it quiet to stop the rif raf form finding out how good it is. We don’t want the 6.5 crud more lot to realise that they have spent so much on the gear and still play second base to the mighty 7-08.I have always wondered why the 7mm08 isn't more popular ??

7mm08 is a great cartridge! I've had one for 17 years now. Wasn't very popular for a long time the only available factory ammo was from Remington in the 130 and 140gn range, designed to come out of a the short barrel of a "long range pistol" as it was developed for International Metallic Silhouette comps.
Mine is in an RPA Interceptor. Bought for range work and never been in the field as too heavy. Loves 168 SMKs with N140 but a modest 2450fps it's a 900yd rifle Max. Still got the original Archer barrel on it. Done nearly 6K rounds and still gives genuine sub-MOA. I've been planning to rebarrel to .260 for a couple of years now, but don't have the heart as the 7mm is still so good!
I imagine performance will fall off a cliff one day...

There’s the age old argument between .308 or .243 and yet sat right in the middle is the 7x08mm in the very same case! Amazing ballistic coefficient and in a short action providing the choice of a barrel down to 16”. Also a better range of non toxic bullets should the need arise!

Can you pass any comments on GMX terminal performance especially on Roe? Starting my quest for non-toxic 7mm08 factory ammo.
Avoid Hornady GMX, way too hard of a bullet unless you are exclusively using it for headshots.

)...to Caberslash I have found GMX work very well in the 7mm on on everything in UK, munty, fallow, roe, sika and reds. I'm pushing them at 2900 fps and find expansion and terminal effect is effective. Factory speeds may well be below this and this may influence expansion as Caberslash has intimated.Took a red hind in Scotland recent at 230m....chest shot through heart/lung...deer went no more than 20-30m.
Lowland/woodland roe same effect in my experience
There are those who will advocate "pinning" the deer or a more forward shot than you would traditional take with a lead bullet. They will "pencil" through if the shot is back but no different to a Barnes or E-Tip.
Caberslash is absolutely right though....they work well with headshots and you dont get runners!

My 7mm-08 has worked very well for the last 15 or so years. It doesn't possess magical qualities but does do all that is asked of it very well and, had it been better marketed with suitable rifles and ammo from the get go, then I am sure it would have proven more popular. The non-magnum sensible hunting cartridge space is quite congested with plenty of sound options to choose from. The 6.5 contenders have the edge at proper long/extreme range but that is of zero interest to me as a UK hunter with shots out to 300m max and vast majority under 200m. I can propel a 120gr bullet from my 7mm-08 at approx the same speed as a same weight bullet from a 6.5 PRC which will, admittedly, show much better ballistics past 300m or with a heavier bullet but for what UK hunters want to do I see the advantage as almost entirely hypothetical. For the true long range hunters and those who want to shoot long range targets then I see the advantages and am not here to start the next fight on the subject! The shame is that the 7mm-08 is pretty much the domain of hand loaders in the UK which will always restrict its popularity but I really do rate it as a very versatile and effective hunting cartridge.
What many fail to consider is the cartridge's function is to deliver a bullet, and there have been excellent big game bullets available for the .256 (ie 6.5mm) and 7mm since the 1900's.

Now on my third barrel for my 7mm-08, so had it a while!
This time ( 2 1/2 years ago) fitted a Proof Research 1:8 twist and it's great. Throws 150g Lapua and other 162g or 160g out beyond 1000m. Mainly set up with 130gr Fox bullets and still very accurate beyond 350 metres for shooting deer.
Great calibre and still better than the crudmore!

Not my usual haunts as I said. But when you've filled the larder and they're all that's available, it's better than the floor.....Wooden gambrels... do you have a time machine back to the 1880's?
Marginal difference in performance in the real world rather than in the armchair compared to 308. Fewer rifles, less ammo available. Circular really. Nowt wrong with it, but why botherI have always wondered why the 7mm08 isn't more popular ??
