The recent sling to a neighbour of a back strap fillet from the last hind that we nailed was well received and the suggestion was made that more meat would be well regarded.
45 mins pre dawn dog and I set off at the same neighbours nearly 2 k`s up behind their house. Nothing at all except for a couple of roo`s was seen then Dog heard the deer and alerted me by sitting and listening,it was impossible for him to scent it due to the wind direction.
Eventually a hind walked slowly across the opposite face and then saw my movement as I lowered myself and reduced the height of my tripod. She stood and watched for some time from behind a tree until satisfied that my shape was no danger.
I wound the Zeiss up a few X`s and laid the rifle over the set up tripod and as she stepped into the anticipated clear between two trees a quick call, sudden stop and bang!
I took the shot as it was a very steep face and a very doable solo retrieve on the steep hill.
Recoil and cover stopped any vision of whether she was DRT so we headed up the hill, puff puff puff. I had left my big Manfrotto down the bottom as I wasnt going to be carting that up there.
I soon found the claret after a good climb, lung claret that is and let dog find,**** me he went the wrong way the silly old ****...yeah right you clown, the wrong way straight to the deer. A maiden hind that went straight UP the hill, shot on rear of the right shoulder edge and exiting just behind the left shoulder. Exit blew a 3" hole through her taking a lot of lung and she still went UP hill, they are tough indeed.
Took a few pics and skied her down,at times letting her go for 20 yard solo slides that only stopped until arrested by trees. Then onwards to the retrieve point and set off for the ute parked 800 yards away and on arrival back at the deer used my rear winch to load her.
Left the guts in till I got home an hour after the shot to stop flies...I cannot see her kidneys for fat. She is a good one and as I has specifically set out for meat it was a good morning.
