The recent sling to a neighbour of a back strap fillet from the last hind that we nailed was well received and the suggestion was made that more meat would be well regarded.
45 mins pre dawn dog and I set off at the same neighbours nearly 2 k`s up behind their house. Nothing at all except for a couple of roo`s was seen then Dog heard the deer and alerted me by sitting and listening,it was impossible for him to scent it due to the wind direction.
Eventually a hind walked slowly across the opposite face and then saw my movement as I lowered myself and reduced the height of my tripod. She stood and watched for some time from behind a tree until satisfied that my shape was no danger.
I wound the Zeiss up a few X`s and laid the rifle over the set up tripod and as she stepped into the anticipated clear between two trees a quick call, sudden stop and bang!
I took the shot as it was a very steep face and a very doable solo retrieve on the steep hill.
Recoil and cover stopped any vision of whether she was DRT so we headed up the hill, puff puff puff. I had left my big Manfrotto down the bottom as I wasnt going to be carting that up there.

I soon found the claret after a good climb, lung claret that is and let dog find,**** me he went the wrong way the silly old ****...yeah right you clown, the wrong way straight to the deer. A maiden hind that went straight UP the hill, shot on rear of the right shoulder edge and exiting just behind the left shoulder. Exit blew a 3" hole through her taking a lot of lung and she still went UP hill, they are tough indeed.
Took a few pics and skied her down,at times letting her go for 20 yard solo slides that only stopped until arrested by trees. Then onwards to the retrieve point and set off for the ute parked 800 yards away and on arrival back at the deer used my rear winch to load her.
Left the guts in till I got home an hour after the shot to stop flies...I cannot see her kidneys for fat. She is a good one and as I has specifically set out for meat it was a good morning.

as she fell 1.webp

must be a fair bark off it when you let a shot off.

foxy i doubt if it is any louder than the usual centrefires although it certainly has quite a bit more power oomph compared to the usuals.

AND i have to add foxy that its platform is a Pommy made PARKER HALE RIFLE.....there are so many denizens of the SD that pooh pooh the PH`s. It seems the hunter is second class if one doesnt bear a Sako or some other brand name.
I will add that it is a PH action/trigger etc B+C stock, LW barrel, that is at the correct 26" length too.
Oh yes in that second video where I mention that the deer has "gone down" meaning it reached its zenith on the hill and went backwards.

That's a hell of a hill mate! Nice shot placement - what was the range? I take your point on rifles and snob value - I shoot a cheap Bergara but it does the job and works well for me, so I'm content. Not sure the deer would agree, but there we are. You should make more films - that was great.

Hey tarp,I have littered "off topic" on the SD with videos,it seems that there are not too many that are either interested or can be bothered entering the threads that I start off.
BUT if I start a thread off with "my cats got a sore arse" in the subject line I reckon there will be 60 replies at the minimum haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Range across was around 100 yards perhaps a tad more.
I would be very happy to deer stalk with a Bergara too.

Cool rifle; I imagine meat damage is fairly minimal on that big and slow round.
I think that big slow round is up near 2900 fps.

Bloody hell, didn’t expect that!

Arrested by trees - like that.

Yesterday stalked close into two big red stags who then, nose down charged 100m at full speed across me. Clattering their way through, I honestly thought if they hit a low branch they would have done a somersault.

Yes it is one of the best 'undiscovered ' cartridges of the world, sure lots know of it but zillions have never heard of them.
Their African rep is awesome.
I have 285 grain Alaskans loaded for her as well.

nothing wrong with a Parker Hale John, I shot one for over 30 years, and still got it and use it, in addition to a couple of cz,s , excellent vids as usual mate, and I hope the cats arse gets better real soon. ;)

Same thoughts here too but actually a few years longer

Lesson I learned long ago was to only shoot at uphill deer :-|

Oh yeah,I too have had my share of the hard yards carrying deer out on long uphills. Lots of deer have been left due to being located in schite places.

I know what you mean mate, fickle bunch here on SD, but mostly with hearts in the right place. We have to have a good reason for calibres we want - is that the same in Oz or once you have your licence, do you just get whatever you think is appropriate? I like the idea of 9.3 for pigs - lots near here, but I have a feeling that I'd only be allowed .308, not that .308/7.62 won't do the job. A good mate of mine's son in law shoots Sambar with .308 and 30-06 (I think), also with a P-H. He's down in the south somewhere near the soft wood plantations - narrowly missed losing his plot to the fires.

tarp its a matter of getting your licence then going to the gun shop and picking out a .303 or a .338 Lap or something in between or bigger.
