A bit different boot question

Hi all

Guess what...im wanting some new boots

The different bit is that I have a dodgy back and knees, and im prone to getting plantar fasciitis, and also have wide feet.

Im sure the majority of the more expensive boots are well made but most, going on what most people say, seem to be stiff/supportive and the like. I want some more high leg boots and would prefer something a little softer as I find a lot of boots give no feeling when walking over rock/hard going and usually the ones with no feel seem most likely to slip on wet rock etc but then some feel softer and more grippy. Im currently using Irish setters and have had them at least 6 years, I find them comfortable and warm and if I was on a peg all day I wouldn't want anything else but when beating and covering rough terrain and clambering over brash left from felling etc they feel numb, heavy and restrictive and I spend all day noticing every step which takes the fun out of it somewhat.
Im thinking of going to the shooting show in February to see what's about but was hoping to hear of people's experiences on here if possible

Nip to Richmond and go to the altberg factory for properly made to measure boots!

Well do ya know wot I've said about doing that more than once. Il be honest, and I know it doesn't matter but I don't like the look of the leather, but it wouldn't stop me buying the correct boot

I went to a podiatrist with plantar fasciitis, he recommended insoles. I have found the insoles sold at decathalon to be most helpful especially in high leg boots.

Yeah been through the process, got some insoles made and had the steroid injection in one side (apparently they only like to do it twice at most in that place, or so they told me, although I've had it loads of times in other parts of my body) its OK at the mo but likes to try and come back at the drop of a hat.
Id just like some boots that would help me be able to walk more like I did when I was younger ha

I would agree with the recommendation to go to Altberg in Richmond Yorkshire..... they do 8 width fittings on some of their styles! that is as standard and do a made to measure option (which is more expensive). They also do proper old style foot measuring. I too have flippers instead of feet and can fit them.

I understand what you’re experiencing in terms of the heavy-duty and supportive boot most SD members will recommend. If it weren’t for the wide fitting requirement I would suggest trying some of the European lightweight walking boots and accept they will need replacing as frequently as every 12-months.

I have wide feet and broke my back and had knee trauma resulting in a few ops and residual Arthritis. CBD oil keeps swelling away. Not a placebo for me 109% fact After living on codine and Co Codamol etc

Altberg do great boots - I like my Lundhags if not really cold, probably should have sized up for liner sock or thicker socks
My all time favourite is though the old style Lowa Mountain GTX Couldn’t find them that did not look like plastic unfortunately. Actually thought to go Army Surplus at one point

Does anyone know of any other boots that feel light on the foot and not too stiff in the sole to add to the list?
I've looked on altbergs site, one thing I noticed is they don't seem to use a gore-tex kind of lining/membrane, and it mentions that they don't garauntee waterproofing but did say something about treating the leather regularly to make them as water repellant as possible.
Has anyone had issues with wet feet in altbergs?
