A few Knives

A few knives for all those who like knife porn.:) ….All completed for fellow deer stalkers in the last month or so.

These were the last few blanks I had left but I am driving to the laser cutters tomorrow to get three sheets of steel cut. Then in the New Year I will be driving to Sheffield and getting over 100 blanks professionally heat treated in bulk by Summitglow of Sheffield. All blanks will be vacuum heat treated then Nitrogen soaked for a few hours to ensure optimum hardness and annealed.

The blanks will be Swedish Uddeholm Elmax and Vanax 'super steels' the latter being the ultimate in salt water corrosion resistance where steel is concerned and recently tested by the US Navy SEAL's where it passed their demanding tests.

As requested there will be several new designs including a 258mm long knife with a 142mm cutting edge. All blades will be either hollow ground or flat ground which are the most efficient for cutting flesh.

I have been busy stabilising lots of high grade exotic and stunning traditional UK woods, all totally impervious to blood and moisture. There will be a choice of composite G10 handles in both dark/bright solid colours and also multi colours.

The two knives here are Elmax of hardness HRC60-61, 3.7mm at the spine, full flat grinds at 4 degrees with 17.5 degree secondary bevels and satin hand finished.
One knife has a orange and black Tiger G10 handle and the other has fully stabilised Spalted Silver Birch with G10 liners, which incidentally will never swell or move unlike fibre liners.

The knives were sharpened by hand and when finished were cutting Rizla papers which in real times is around twice as sharp as a Gillette razor.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Mark, I haven't worked out the costings with the new steel yet but I would expect around the £275-285 mark for stabilised wood. That will also include a kydex sheath and mosaic pins. I am hoping to keep the longer knives to the same price, there will also be smaller styles of knife at a lower price.

Absolutely stunning

I’ve thought about one but I’m going to hang off

Reason is I really need to up my game with regards to knives sharpening and I would wreck the edge on knives like that I’d be gutted .

Peter took lot of time out to advise me & I now have set of water stones 1000/6000 grit & I already have old oil stones so I’m currrebtly wrecking some old moras trying to learn this voodoo / dark art knife sharpening carry on ...

It’s not going to be quick 😳

And I have no patience to sit with a larnsky type kit with the correct edge angles etc😳

So Untill I get semi proficient I’ll continue wrecking cheaper blades 😂

My son is a gardener and uses a simple hand st e to sharpen his grafting knife so that he can shave with it. No dark art just it takes time. Harder the steel longer it will take. He just sits there all evening sometimes slowly honing his knife.

Good to see such quality craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing.

Kind regards,

Carl

Hi Paul,

If you're looking at sharpening your knives you could do worse than watch the attached video link and see how a butcher sharpens his knives.

Where would you get the stuff to have a go at building a knife myself
Brisa online is a good site, Its in Finland but the service is brilliant, If you looking for a good blank to handle look at the Enzo trapper or similar, excellent steel and really good size blades.
