A Magnetic Barrel Holder I've been working on !

I've been playing with different ideas/versions of a magnetic barrel clamp/holder for a number of weeks. This is the 4th version, and I think it's pretty much there ! Final sizes, and materials to be decided, but the body parts are printed in ASA-Glass Fibre, and the jaw, in flexible TPU 95A. I'll be testing other materials, and will pick the best. There are four parts, excluding the magnet, and retainers. The back, rod, nut, & jaw.

I wanted to make it modular, so it's flexible, and can be easily changed if the requirement changes, so adjustable length, and easily changeable "holder", if there's a change in type, or barrel diameter. I also thought the insert clamps could be offered individually, the same if a longer extension rod is required at a later date.

The "rifle" version is pretty much done. I thought "15-16mm", "17-19mm" and a "22mm", or similar would cover most options, but I can adjust to suit other options. I'm also working on an insert for double rifles, and the various shotguns options.

I'm interested in some feed back ?

That's a great idea and I can imagine that there'll be a variety of uses besides a holder in a cabinet/safe.

I have to be honest, it was my godsons idea, commented on what a pain the slotted foam safe manufacturers tend to fit is. Particularly if you have a mix of scoped rifles, and shotguns. As soon as he said it, I kicked myself for not having thought about it, because I'm always f'ing and blinding, trying to get guns in, and out, without dinking a scope, or a barrel, even though there's space, just in the wrong place.

I'm working on other ideas, but one thing at a time ;)

I've been meaning to make some barrel rests as my cabinet is chocka and often clash guns together getting them in and out. I bought some magnet but that's as far as I've got.
What would you charge me for some?

Will,

Please give me a couple of days to finalise the design, and the materials, and see what I can get the print time down to, so I can cost it.

What size magnets did you get, and what are they rated to ?

Cheers mark. I bought some neoydium 12mm magnets. No idea how much they’re rated to but my kids can’t pull them apart! They have a countersunk hole in them so I could screw them into some wood.

I don't know the rating, but they sound a bit on the small side. I'm currently deciding between 25, and 30mm countersunk, so they can be bolted in, rather than mess around with glue/epoxy.

This magnet measures 29mm, sold as 30mm, hence the gap, and it's totally useless, no strength

I'm waiting for some samples, and I'll modify the pocket to suit, once I'm happy they'll be up to safely securing our guns !

Following on, I've been testing various size / length options, ribbing the base for easier grip when tightening/loosening, narrowed it down to two main lengths, and clamps in three barrel diameters. and finally found a super strong magnet rated to circa 36kg - 40kg pull.

The lengths may vary +/- a few millimeters.

SHORT OPTION: 85mm - 115mm. For small scoped rifles, and there will be a clamp available for over & under shotguns & double rifles, with a side by side option to follow as soon as I can.

LONG OPTION: 105mm - 145mm. This option seems to cover scopes/sights up to a 60mm objective.

BARREL CLAMP: 16-17mm, 19mm, & 22mm. Interchangeable in seconds, and will be available individually, should someone change a gun, or barrel, rather than replace the full holder.

CURRENT COLOURS: Black, Red, Orange, Blue, Yellow, & Green, available in all barrel sizes, for colour coding.

These should cover most sizes, but I can modify to suit individual requirements.

Other than confirming the pricing, have I missed anything useful ?

i keep seeing them, there a good idea but £40 each, with 4 rifles and 2 shotguns that would cost me £240,

But these are not £40.00 each., and the price includes post, and VAT.

1 @ £35.00

2-4 @ 32.00 each

5+ @ £29.00 each,

And I'll be doing the 5+ price for SD members on 3 or more. So only £116.00 for four, not £240.00.

I like the other one being offered, and realized the price you referred to related to that, and it is expensive, non adjustable, and you need to spend £200.00 before shipping is included.

Like anything, some people will be happy using Gaffer Tape, and some will prefer something a little more practical ;)

Just as an aside, it takes circa 3hrs of print time, to print the four parts for each holder !
