A Very Special, Sentimental Knife

There is nothing particularly special about the knife itself, per se, although it will be a very nice thing.

During one of the early conversations between my client and me, he mentioned that his family had suffered a bereavement; they had lost one of their dogs. If I were to be sent a clipping of fur, could I build it into his new knife?

I'm not about to refuse that request.

It was decided that a small channel would be machined into the back of one of the scales, in which the effects could be sealed by way of a clear resin, then further covered by a thin G10 liner, fully encapsulated, and protected.

I think that is a lovely idea, I did a similar thing with the ashes of my last dog, keeping him hunting with me.
We really are a sentimental lot. WhatsApp Image 2024-06-05 at 21.35.13_f1aa06d2.webp

It was quite a funny one for me, this one.

Kirinite is Kirinite, and compared to some handle materials, it is reasonably priced and available.

Generally, I'd fit the scales and crack on; if something went wrong (which doesn't usually happen), I would strip it, swap the scales out and start again.

The difference in my mindset when those scales were inlayed, though, was fathomable. I was suddenly terrified of doing something wrong, of messing them up. It was a tough build once the scales were fitted.
