Add on NV for 308

Hi all,

I’ve been using a Pard 007 with a PBIR on my RF for years with great success, but what is the current thinking for add on NV with a decent scope?

I’ve got a Vortex Strike Eagle which I LOVE for day shooting, but the 007 eye relief isn’t great and the picture is lacking clarity out past 100m

What are people using to add night time ability to their rifles, I’m desperate to have the .308 as a “do everything rifle” and not add a dedicated foxing .223 to the cabinet (although having seen the image on the drone pros……..!!!!)

I started with the Wulf 4K but I’m not a fan of digital day scopes, preferring glass.

Thoughts welcomed pleased!!

That’s the US mil spec tactical unit? That might be a little OTT 🤣

I’m thinking consumer unit price point.

Understood, but they have an eight-year warranty, and they are jolly good to look through. A new Pard is 4 or 500 quid, and a Vulpine 3 must be about 800 quid.

The vulpine does look reminiscent of the home brew NV of days gone by!

Interestingly all of the videos I’ve seen are using the PBIR Laser torch. I have an older not laser version….?

Definitely the Vulpine Mk3, head position will be exactly the same as most scopes so no need to crane your neck into some ridiculous position.
Simple on/off button sees it boot up instantly and a very secure fixing onto the scope doesn’t move at all.
By my reckoning, base mag is about 1.5x.

What are the front mount options like?
As that resolves the recoil black eye issue? 🕶️
I’m using the Vulpine on a 22-250 and no recoil issues at all, I also wear glasses 🙄 and still not a problem.
I did try contacts for a brief spell and again, not a problem using it.

I use the Ludicrous Lumens Wraith laser in 940nm and can genuinely ID well out past 300yds, I started off with the 850nm and that had a much longer range but the local pikeys have got everything used to lamps meaning danger.

Are the scope fittings of the Pard compatible with vulpine and parallax required as normal

The Vulpine comes with a set of adaptors in different thicknesses that slip onto the ocular bell so you just choose which one fits your scope the best. As with other rear add-ons, it works best with parallax adjustable scopes.

The attachment will be difficult on scopes that have an illumination turret on the ocular bell.

One of the issues will be the Vortex scope. I am afraid they have many good points but they are the best with rear NV. I can get a better picture through my Blaser 2.8-20x50 or Z6i 2.5-15x56 than through the Vortex. Don’t get me wrong none of these are knock your pants off amazing but they are good for 100-150 yards which suits me fine for accidental foxes or staying out for boar after deer. Randomly the relatively cheap Vortex is the worst of the three, which you wouldn’t expect.

I would maybe look at selling your pard NV007A and getting the NV007S which won’t give you eye relief issues because it’s something like 40mm less length and gives normal eye relief. Then scope wise a Delta 2.5-15x56 or GPO Spectra 4-16x50 or most Hawkes etc. With some pennies from your old pard and some pennies from your scope I am pretty sure the above is the most cost efficient solution for you. The above scopes should give you glass that punches above their price for daytime and decent NV ability 200 yards plus and even more with external torches etc.

just had a look and it looks like it is built in to the unit with shims to secure, nice set up just bolts on :thumb:

would the v3 suit a 204 @ 200 mtrs range with a parallax scope on clarity, shot and ID, thinking of putting T ceptor on the hornet perhaps as I use that more than the 204 out of lambing time

cheers

I'd say you have 3 choices - none of them perfect
a. NV rear add-on with a suitable scope (and by all accounts that excludes pretty much anything made by Vortex)
b. Dedicated day/night scope (which you say you don't like)
c. NV front add-on (which limit scope magnification range and may have issues holding zero)
If you really want an NV capability you need to look hard at what compromises you may need to make.

Cheers

Absolutely. Using my 940 Wraith I can 100% Id something the size of a hare past 300yds, the 850 is considerably brighter still.
For the record, I’m using an Element Optics Titan 5-25x56 FFP, £670 new and the picture is pin sharp, streets ahead of a comparable Hawke IMO.
The other night I had a fox trot up to within 30yds of me but on lowest mag it was still easy to locate it in the field of view.

I’ve rangefinded at night with my Accolades a fox at 385 meters and with the Vulpine/Wraith set up it was perfectly shootable if I’d desired taking it on. At night not something I’d do but it squeaked in to a more sensible range. It truly is the best NV out there. 200 meters and a Delta 2.5 -15x56 you can almost count hairs. Mounted on a .223 it’s done me proud.
