ADVICE FROM HAMPSHIRE POLICE

One has to wonder at what point will revenue from deerstalking have to be 'parked' and if neccesary beasts left to decompose where they fall on the hill.

Its not a pleasing scenario but let's not forget very few fox shooters think twice about chucking Ol' Charly into a patch of brambles at the end of their session with the lamp.

I have had numerous phone calls from a varied amounts of controllers all over the UK asking what they should do. On one hand you have forest owners complaining on damage being done and on the other hand there is no place to put the deer after they are culled and with many controllers like myself who's only wage from it is the carcass then the stalker is the only real person tgats losing out atm .

The advice from Hampshire police is flawed. There is no restriction on going to work, except for hospitality business which have been ordered to close. The guidance is to work from home if you can. There is no requirement to only work in essential services. The key workers are a list of people who can send their kids to school, some how key workers/essential services have been conflated (please correct me if I have this wrong, there has been such a deluge of dross in the media that the important messages have been buried).

That said, I think it is a great thing that the professional and amateur wildlife management community have been able to show such restraint

I agree there is a deluge of misinformation on the internet...it is important to go to the source rather than the equivalent of the bloke down the pub...and read it!

We have resources like the .gov and the WHO the American CDC and the ECDC which are the only ones worth reading...the BBC and Guardian are good at providing links to those resources but it is still worth checking the links yourself.

The need for social distancing is going to be with us until a vaccine is found and those still vulnerable inoculated...a vaccine is going to be 18 months even fast tracked according to the WHO last time I looked. Home made face masks should/will become commonplace amongst those not wishing to spread the virus as recommended by the CDC.

The hysteria about going to work as far as I can see is based on the images of crowded tube trains with unmasked people, and not on me in my car travelling to my self employed sole trader workshop doing solo work. I do not qualify for Covid-19 wage support under the self-employment scheme, my income is too low... so one of my contributions to the national good is to carry on working (at home when possible) and keep ticking over as best I can, rather than burden national resources further.

“During this time of unprecedented disruption, the UK Government is not asking all businesses to shut – indeed it is important for business to carry on. Only some non-essential shops and public venues have been asked to close.”

Alan

We will have to find a way to work and play around the virus over the next 18 months, until the vaccine has been discovered, manufactured and deployed. Lockdown and 80% wage support for those that qualify is patently unsustainable for that length of time.

Good news is that SD is a very safe form of SD...we can chat without infection risk... :)

Are the game dealers closed because they mainly sell to restaurants, hotels and pubs? The supermarkets and butchers would not have stopped buying venison presumably.

Bo idea but most of tge venison shot in this coubtry goes abroad or into weightwatchers meals and Lind restraunts .

Has noone noticed that only stuff left ib the meat aisle is venison? Those who shoot grudge paying supermarkets and those that dont just see it as Bambi and have literally no idra how amazing venison is actually for you, very low fat almost non existent, low cal and huge amounts of protein

I will retype my last post because I cannot edit , I was dosing off when I typed that lol

I think Mr Hill is going to have to reconsider his advice in line with the new Police guidance about to be issued which states that people are allowed to drive to the countryside for exercise/walk as long as the activity takes longer than the drive.

If that is the case I wonder how exactly that would be worded. Could I for instance drive four hours up to North Wales for a walk provided that I walked for more than four hours when I get there? :-|

Forgive me if I have misunderstood you.
In the case of any animal (any animal) suffering and in need of dispatch (nonsense word meaning killing) disposal is a matter of complete indifference to me.
The only thing that matters to me is the alleviation of suffering and absolutely nothing should stand in the way of that.
I think you will find I was talking about a job of doing tree protection as I am concerned . So nowhere to put the animals is the comment I was making. Suffering deer never came into the topic at the time. ...J

Then I seek to rely on the prefix to my post:-

"Forgive me if I have misunderstood you".

I`ve stopped shooting. No problem, I can catch up with the roe, muntjac squirrels, foxes later. (I hope)
I visit only once per week for feeding and security checks. leave my guns at home.
There are thousands dying daily but,
I tell you its a free for all: scramblers, quadbikers, multiple dog walkers, cars parked everywhere, they go anywhere
they like, miles from the footpath. messing with feeders, I`m not employed, but it seems I`m the only one in lockdown.
Everyone else is on a long bank holiday.
Not got on to poachers yet bet they are not in lockdown.

Correct, although to be fair, there's no point going to work if you are employed at a leisure centre, an hotel, a shop other than the obvious, a dentist's, a barber, a dry-cleaner, etc. etc etc. The doors are likely to be locked.
Dentists are still doing emergency appointments I’d guess :-|

I don't think that is strictly correct. Why can't staff in those businesses go in to work to do deep cleaning, routine maintenance, prep and so forth ?

Interestingly the local police to me have had to turn out to at least three reports of gun shots in the last few days. The first incident warranted the helicopter and an armed response team...

There's lots more bored people at home and sat out in there gardens in this nice weather, and whether its genuine concern or a bit of maliciousness any folk out and about are going to get reported and I did see something on social media about people already having there licences revoked.

I'm lucky enough to live on a farm and there's plenty of Roe Bucks showing, but with no crop damage etc I cannot justify going out, the law / rules are too woolly and I value my licence / sport too much.

So just phone in to 101, explain you are going out doing essential crop protection with firearms, give them location, vehicles, contractor(s) name(s) and time of operation and get a log number.

I’m not talking about roe bucks here, rabbits & pigeons, rooks, things that do a lot of damage to spring drilled crops

There were lots of pigeons damaging an emerging cereal crop in Wiltshire last weekend, there are 118 less now and the crop is getting away, further helped by the rain due tonight. All booked in with the police and the field had houses on 2 boundaries.....

All very true and logical but it’s the driving to and from the shooting ground they don’t like, unless you do so on a bike or a horse.
3000 odd fines been issued now for non essential time out of lockdown.

And as far as I have been told (from 2 police officers in 2 forces) current guidance is they are not to fine now but to advise and educate the public instead.

Yes.

The knock on effects and inter connectivity of this is revealing is unreal, was chatting to a dairy farmer I shoot for, the farm is quite a big herd, he's been asked to reduce production by 3% so not the end of the world as long as he is given time to build the yield up again after. But his death on farm rate is going to go up, the yard that normally takes 20-30 barren cows a month off him are taking 2-3 a month now because the hides go to leather in Italy and the meat goes to the french restaurant trade. He uses rape kernels as his protein feed but he is struggling to get it, chip shops are shut so less rapeseed oil is being produced.......

All dental practices are closed under instruction from Public Health England due to the risk from "aerosol generating procedures" (i.e. drilling!)
Your dentist should be available to give you telephone advice and triage any emergency. Dentists are being advised to give Advice, Analgesics and where appropriate Antibiotics. If you have a severe problem then there should be a local Urgent Dental Care Centre where your dentist can refer you for emergency treatment.
Alas if you have just broken a tooth or lost a crown and you are not in severe pain or at risk from a life threatening swelling then its a bit of string and a door!
