AICS Remington 700

Hi guys

I'm hoping that someone on here can offer a bit of assistance.

I want to buy a VuDoo .22LR rifle (will be imported from the USA), and I'd really like to have an Accuracy International chassis on it, whilst they do offer this, first it's really expensive and secondly, I'm not really keen on the aesthetics of the newer AI stuff.

My options are to buy a barreled action which is significantly cheaper than with the stock (and will save a ton on import duty too), and subsequently purchase a second hand AI stock over here, the style I'm after, I think is referred to as AICS 1.5 or 2.0 (Looks like the chassis on the L96A1), not quite certain what the difference is, but it needs to be manufactured for a short-action Remington 700.

I've seen a few kicking about from time to time on here, sadly now sold. And a few more in an online store (Helstons), but after contacting the company, never got back to me, it was listed as AT AICS for the AW. Way too many acronyms for met to figure out!

So, I'm trying get a bit of clarity about the stock I'd like to buy, assuming AICS 1.5 or 2.0 are the correct names.

Sounds like you are intent on throwing a large sum of money down a hole.

Won't stop you, but there are plenty of other actions which can be had for comparatively little money (e.g Tikka T1x) and fit into the better more modern chassis designs offered by MDT.

Only advantage of the Voodoo is being a 700 clone, you can use Trigger Tech or Bix'n Andy triggers, the best of which are north of £250...

I'm certainty open to taking a look at other options, the only reason for the AI one is for nostalgic reasons!

The Bergara B14R is a Remington 700 footprint as well. If you just want an L96 clone in .22RF, that’s a significantly cheaper option. You can even get them as a barreled action in the UK, just meaning you’d need to buy a stock.

I’m not 100% sure they’re directly compatible with the AICS chassis. Your best bet might be to contact Dave Wylde at Valkyrie Rifles - he’s got a lot of experience in this area.

Bergara .22lr in an AICS AT chassis, very solid, works great with no problems with ammo feed etc.

Speak to Pete Walker (Walker rifles), not too far from you in Halifax. He built me exactly what you are describing. The Vudoo action was sourced within the UK. It si an exact replica of my 260 Remington. Shoots and feeds beautifully.

@Dr. Strangelove - I've looked into the Bergara B14R, however, it may be American patriotism, but every forum I've read (they have all been US focused) have pretty much said that the VuDoo wins, not always by a great deal but enough to sway me. My usage case is going to be 25/50 yard bench rest, perhaps throw in a bit of prone too, but want to also try out some long range 22LR, this discipline interests me the most.

They said the Bergara B14R is a production line rifle whereas the VuDoo is hand made, and a lot more expensive, but is it worth the extra expense is the question.

I also forgot about Dave Wylde, I was down at his workshop with a friend about 6 months ago.

@Andycx - Which barrel and length did you go with? Looks like the MTU, but I don't recognise the fluting. Also, is there anything that you spec'd out that you would have changed now you have used the rifle? And finally, would you mind sharing what you paid for the action and was there any complexities that you did not anticipate, shipping, import duty etc? I've had a quote from someone who VuDoo put me onto who is their UK supplier, but I guess there are more than one. It looks lovely by the way, if possible i'd be looking for the chassis system prior to this one.

I was also going to suggest a B14R, it can also be had with a carbon wrapped barrel as well as the steel option.

The AICS AT is a lovely chassis, has a long history of active service with our forces and best of all it is British!

I have the 2.0 version in black seen below, accuracy international do made a thumb hole conversion kit to make it more like the AI artic warfare.

Dauntsey guns advertise AICS stocks , they don't keep them in stock, but I assume order them in.
I have 2 Rem 700 s both with these stocks , one fixed , one folder , they're built like a tank , and are very customisable, but they are very heavy.
One of them came from countryman in Derby , ex police , for around 500 quid , it's worth asking when they might get some more.
It's worth noting , they have their own magazine , which will require extensive modification to work with .22lr.

The mags are made in the AI format but for 22LR, so should be fine.

Paddy Dane pretty much is the go to importer of all exotic actions from the USA. He supplies the trade and does a bit of machine work when he isn’t too busy having fun.

Your best bet is to buy the VuDoo barrelled action from him or one of the various RFD’s he supplies. Especially if you want to put it in an Accuracy International chassis as you don’t want to pay extra shipping and duty for the stock to leave the U.K. just to return!

I did think the same about the AICS chassis, but apparently it's made at the AI facility in the States, some weird ruling that n% of a firearm sold there must be of US origin.

I have a couple of clients I’ve built CF rifles for buy them and then have problems with accuracy and build quality

Sorry, been away to see son number 1 in Portugal. The barrel is not a Vudoo product but rather a Brux barrel, 16". The fluting was done, as was the whole rifle, to mimic my 260 Remington, also built by Pete. The action was sourced by Pete from a dealer in the UK. Nothing I would change with the spec. Pete is a very approachable guy and very helpful. Just give him a ring and chat. He also makes a good cup of tea!
