Any innovative solutions for suspended gralloch?

I don't have a lot of Fallow to worry about.....but as I get older and fatter, my mind turns to the issue of boosting them....and my blood pressure rises as my enthusiasm decreases....

I have a Napier auto lift which works for the field, but trying to work out a way to use it off my roof rack via some sort of metal bar thingy to attach temporarily

I don't have a tow bar for the usual solutions - and an auto lock won't work as the boot is side opening..... plus wasn't too impressed with it last time I had one with another vehicle.....

And as you can see from my highly technical description, my engineering skills are none existent.......so struggling to work out what may work.

Pictures of vehicle and roof rack attached for reference......

Why do you particularly want to suspend them?
If you're struggling with shifting them about then your main problem is going to be actually getting them into the back of the vehicle.
I'd suggest doing a basic field gralloch (green only, don't cut into the chest or neck) on the ground, and do the rest back at the larder.

And sort out a loading ramp for your vehicle with a simple pulley system attached to forward tiedown point in your loadbed to drag them up the ramp

I looked into doing a similar thing when I had a pick up, using the roof rack. What I found was that the weight of a good fallow put too much strain on the existing roof bars. With the weight hanging out at the end of a pole attached to the bars meant a lot of torque was put into them and the roof and just testing it and putting some weight on didn't feel like it was going to end well.

In the end I fitted a winch and hoist to a cheap trailer. The hoist slides into the holders bolted to the side of the trailer so it can come on and off easily. Now a suspended gralloch is even easier and I can lower it straight into the plasterers bath in the trailer.

Take the meat from the beast and leave the rest for nature to enjoy. Should fit in a large rucksack in game bags. If you’re allowed to leave the residual carcass behind of course.

I have a Napier truck click going spare if you wanted to make an offer Phil. Assumes you have a tow bar.

Just get a piece of aluminium scaffold tower bracing that’s a convenient size to fit in your vehicle ( look on ebay etc) like this :

Then hook it underneath the front roof rack bar and let it then hang over the rear bar ( gives you more height at the business end. Then just attach a pulley on the other end that’s hanging over the back of your car. It doesn’t need to lift the entire animal off the ground if it’s a big one, just highe enough to get the thing past vertical to unzip it cleanly and let everything slide out.
There are more complicated things you can make, but that’s a really nice quick way for under £20. I’ve done it before when I used to drive a Toyota landcruser that had a roof rack as I happened to have a bit lying in the back and used it. Obviously, that was much higher than the car in your picture so you could do a full suspension, I rarely bothered though. But, as stated you only need to get a gambrel into the back legs and lift it up a bit.
Kindest regards, Olaf

Thanks mate but don't, would be the perfect solution too! 👍
One of these then.

Up to 165kg according to the blurb.

Depending on your species I knocked this up purely for Roe and Muntjac, it’s on my jimny on top of a standard steel roof bar held on with 2 exhaust U bolts basically 1” steel tube inside a 11/4 “ tube it slides in and out and it has nut and D threaded bolt which allows the length sliding out and secures it when not in use it works perfectly on the jimny I have put a pricket on it but the jimny isn’t the tallest vehicle and the head is on the ground
Very easy to make for a higher car and thicker gauge steel for fallow
It just works for the smaller species Tim 243 made me some very tidy hangers for it which gives even more clearance, very little gear ton carry, the other way is to gralloch and a small covered car trailer, couple of stands on the back and a little winch = no back ache
a better heighg as wellIMG_5662.jpeg

Boot is side opening.......😞

Probably easiest thing is bite the bullet and find a SH tow bar and get it fitted. Then get a hoist off TomB or Deer Trays.

That would be a great solution and just avoid Fallow ......🙂.

Ok to maybe PM you to discuss specs etc? I can get a fabricator I know to maybe knock it up for me.....

That’s really interesting , how do you lower the deer straight into the plasterers mixing bath on the trailer ?

Just use some repurposed tent poles or 3 bits of hazel and a bit of braided cord.
Kindest regards, Olaf

This sort of thing
Or just look up 3 way connector on ebay etc
You don’t need a fabricator or any engeneering skills my friend 👍 happy hunting.

The hoist is free to rotate in the two clamps on the side. The top clamp allows the vertical bar to pass through and rotate freely. The bottom clamp has a ridge or flange at the bottom that stops the bar from dropping through to the ground. This clamp has a hex grub screw (the system is key clamp I believe) that I welded an old Allen key to so I can lock it in position while gralloching then loosen it and swing the hoist around.

Best part was it was all less than £20 secondhand from someone who bought a house that had this down the front path for a previous elderly owner. There was probably enough pipework and clamps to make two joists.

You can buy all the fittings new and if you get them to fit old scaffold tubes then you can make more of a saving.

This is exactly what I wanted to make initially, but I had too much flexibility from the roof bars with anything over a decent sized roe. Otherwise it would have been a great solution.
