Anyone care to hazard a guess on today's Vet's bill?

"Can you come with me to pick him up, he may need to be lifted into the car?"

Is what she said.

"Can you come with me to pick him up, he may need to be paid for".

Is what I heard.

I also loaded up the pup - partly to keep her with us, but also because she has a wound (?foreign body) in her FOS leg.😫
I have taken a photograph of the wound (as requested) and if they can fit her in now, at least she is with us.

(Turns out they can't and she is booked in for next Monday evening, at the same time the old fella has his follow up).

Off we go.

When we get there, I am relieved to see there were no Ferraris in the carpark.

Out comes the old fella, looking a wee bit sleepy. I hoist him into the back, and the pup is delighted to see him safe and sound.
Funny thing. When I put her in the kennel today (whilst the old fella was at the vets she howled like a Beagle - she has never howled in her life) - she must miss his company.

And now to pay the Piper.

I was expecting north of £1,000 and even creeping over £2,000 into the 3K territory.

Is it wrong to say I am 'delighted' with this bill?

So we have a winner - to be fair at this price, I feel like a winner also.

At a guess of £650 (so out by only £12.24) is it @dunwater.

That's not bad really. I think I've commented before that dentals can be a problem to estimate as it isn't until the mouth is fully open that you can assess the damage. And hen one can't predict ow easily a tooth will come out. Remember that gripping teeth have very strong attachments and even dead ones can be a challenge. Most vets now will go for a surgical removal involving gum flaps and removing bone rather than just tugging and hoping.

We could make it cheaper, no pain relief, no fluids, old fashioned backsaw and hammer approach, but our patients prefer the newer approach!

If you reload - send me your brass and I will stainless steel wash them, AMP anneal and then return.
I used to dabble…no more, an ex minister of justice created a new offence complete with swinging penalties.
I think I might have some molybdenum coated 50 gr vmax somewhere.
You’re welcome to them provided I still have them and I can get them to you without either of us relying on old friends and influence to avoid penalties.

Indeed odd that reloading was banned down there but since the ban quite a few Irish shooters come up North to shoot and my friend tells me invariably go back with more than they brought 🤫

Never found my local vets extortionate, the prices have always been good.

After trying insurance in the past and seeing the way they worm out of paying for future problems of the same nature I've just kept cash in a seperate savings account.

This is my brother's approach but looking back now over our 8 dogs, I honestly reckon I've had my money's worth back out of the insurance companies (even if the Financial Ombudsman had to find in my favour once again PetPlan).

Back to the OP - that's a fair bill :thumb:

I think Ive always had the view that if something was super expensive then its likely very serious and something I wouldnt want to put the animal through it or put them through the rehabilitation and recovery, not because I'm tight but because I don't think they'd understand all the trauma they're being put through.

My last dog had a few tumors removed and then kept on antihistamines and prednisolone, she had no pain etc and lived another 6yrs (nearly 16). Paid to have them removed and paid cash for the meds as they were very cheap.

OK.
When and why?

I wish someone would ban it in the UK - would save me a fortune in both money, time and medical expenses...🤕

from memory it was 2009, and it’s not banned but you need an authorisation which is as rare as hobby horse shite.
The clever bit was the fine and jail term if you got caught without a permit.

Hmmm.
I had a tooth out 3 weeks ago - you probably heard the screams. Cost me £65 incl. Xrays. Mind you if it had been much more Mrs FB said I wouldn’t be coming back from the dentist!
So somebody is making ( a lot of) money somewhere!

That’s the exact price x 6 that we paid last year to have 6 teeth removed from Clyde…£650 total.

Absolutely correct though looks like 2006 - see attached.
