Anyone else using Muron KVB Primers?

Decided to pick up some Muron KVB primers after a few issues with CCis recently (some duff primers in Small Rifle especially).

Reports are they're more reliable and exhibit smaller SD/ES.

Not essentially needed for stalking, but for some of you longer range shooters, could be worth a look.

I'll publish my SD/ES figures in comparison with CCI once I develop a new batch of ammo using them.

I've used Muron large rifle primers, picked them up cheap from HPS a few years ago when primers were in short supply. I've not had any real issues with them but I've heard others complain about them and I also heard that HPS weren't too impressed with them either and that is why they unloaded them cheaply but I can't confirm the validity of that comment.

That's odd - I bought 100,000 of their LRP some years ago and am just getting to the last couple of thousand -absolutely excellent primer and every bit as good as Federal

The basic Large Rifle model (KVB-7) was / is very good indeed and is popular with long-range F-Class competitors. HPS-TR also got in a lot of LR Magnums (KVB-7M) which were far less satisfactory. These were the ones sold off cheap. It's not that the KVB-7M is a poor model in itself - I use older examples (PMC branded) of this model extensively in F-Class and 1.000 yard BR ammunition - it just seems to have been a poor manufacturing lot. This isn't confined to Murom - there is a live thread right now on the AccurateShooter forum which says there have been failures with current lots of CCI-450 Small Rifle Magnums

I can also remember a particularly poor lot of German manufactured RWS primers maybe 10 years back. They all went 'bang' OK but gave disastrous long-range match performance. Running rounds using them over a chronograph saw three-figure MV ES values and a return to Federal 210Ms restored things to sub 20 fps ES results.

out of the many many many thousands of cci i have whacked with a firing pin i can honestly say i have never had an issue with them but, i have been using murons, as like you, i read Laurie report on them and HPS-tr are only up the road, be quick on them as a lot of other have not cottoned onto them and the price is rising as matts having to keep chasing socks. they use to be half the cost of cci but now their on a par

Murom/PMC are very good, their small rifle primers are excellent and the large rifle were 2nd to Federal Match for consistency in the last test I saw.

Certainly wouldn't say they're expensive, £23/1000 for Small and £30 for large.

I believe it may have been an article that you wrote Laurie that first put me onto them. It's the KVB-7 primer's I'm trying. I've tried everything to get my SD down to single figures but best I've managed was about 15 using CCI, usually averaging closer to 20 so this is just an experiment to see if the primers will make a difference as some of my LR (1000 yd) loads are well into transonic and the effects of this are way more pronounced on both elevation and windage than Strelock has predicted. If I can get elevation pinned with more precision, that'd be a good start to pulling things in.
