For the "leaded" end I've used lignum vitae, as it's a lovely hard wood that won't show any dents after you've whacked the fish, pheasant, etc Typically it's darker than shown here, but this lighter wood shows the grain well.
For the one that is also capped at the "tail" end I've used thuya burl. This is a beautifully grained wood - I bought a stunning block of this that sadly is now almost used up.
As well as being glued, both caps are held in place by a length of 3mm brass rod that goes through the wood and into the antler/lead. This makes for a nice secure fixing. If you want to do this you will need to buy a 3.1mm drill bit, but the good news is that you can use the same for securing the pins on knife blade scales, so it's a worthwhile investment.
I'v just read through this thread and its taken my interest i have a stick but it is very plain and boring so would love to try and get some antler on top. I don't suppose any of you have a spare bit i could have to give it a go? So far i have never been stalking so never been able to get any of my own. Thanks
Willie as far as I know there is no added weight at all,the stick is very solid and weighty enough though and holding by the ground end would give an attacking rottweiler or mugger a bloody good 'hammer tap' on the scone.
