Can you say what about Holly is better?

I use hazel for stalking sticks, and need to make up a new set. I’d be very curious to try something different.

I used holly for years, for beating game cover & handling cattle. Its hard, doesn't split or fracture. If your going to the trouble of making a nice stick, why go for for an inferior wood. My first choice would be black thorn, but not easy to find a straight one or extract it. If you drill a hole through it & hang the stick at one end & put a decent weight at the other end, you will end up with a nice straight stick
