Seasoned stick

After reading thread attaching antler to a walking stick, a very kind SD member is sending me a piece of antler (as I don’t stalk) to have a go at making one, so I’m looking for a seasoned hazel stick, where’s best to purchase? I will be cutting a few at the weekend but that means I will have to wait about a year before I can make one.

There are some on Ebay.
But if you cut a hazel stick in autumn it will take approximately 12 months to season and then you can straighten it. Good luck with your first walking stick.

Have a search for “ stick making supplies” or stick makers.
Hazel shafts should be cheap and cheerful, but there are better choices, sweet chestnut coppice is pretty good, blackthorn is the King but holly and plum can be a good choice.
The shaft will be cheaper if you’re happy to have a go at straightening it yourself.

I've got 2 Hazel sticks in the garage you are more that welcome to. I'll post pictures and dimensions later. They've been in there for probably 5 years

If you get up to Milton Keynes I have plenty of seasoned hazel shanks that you could pick a couple from

Im a complete novice regarding making sticks, started off by seeing a few on forums and shooting shows, having got it in my head to knock a few up for me and Mrs B I started collecting. 1st off looking to make my life easy i picked the straightest sticks i could find, those being Holly and Rosewood, i loved the Rose with the thorn pattern, the holly you can strip the bark to reveal a white wood or leave it on. Have a play, its nice to go out with something that you've made. rose stick 2.webp

Can you say what about Holly is better?

I use hazel for stalking sticks, and need to make up a new set. I’d be very curious to try something different.
I know its, hard and heavier than hazel, and if you find a Holly tree they often have an abundance of straight lengths suitable.
