Applying for SGC just after my FAC....

You can shoot game with a section 2 semi.
You cant shoot game with a section 1 semi.

I know, if you are talking about legalities. But try taking a semi of any sort on many driven shoots, see how far you get. That's what I meant by adding the "old chap" as though the old shoot captain was having a word in the ear of the person arriving for the day with his semi. Didn't mention laws. Was trying to veer a person away from buying a semi-auto as a do everything gun, is all.

Semi's aren't always a good idea from a practical point for clays anyway as many cycle poorly with 24gm or subsonic loads which may be required at some grounds to meet noise restrictions. Also, especially if you are new to a ground they make people a touch nervous as it isn't immediately possible to see if a semi is safe, even with a chamber flag when compared to a break barrel gun. This was brought home when they were banned from the schools clay competitions for this very reason. Don't get me wrong, there are times when they are invaluable, the foreshore or the pigeon hide spring to mind, but for game or clays? Possibly less so. Just my opinion. PS i have used my Silver Pigeon for everything from rabbit and pigeon shooting, clays right through to driven grouse and never once felt out of place. It makes sense to practice for driven days with the gun you will use on them and they do come with 3" chambers, so use on ducks isn't inconceivable either. Also, there is a nice Rizzini gun for sale on here for £250 so an over under isn't necessarily more expensive than a semi anyway

I went down the FAC shotgun route because I couldn't be bothered to apply for a SGC to join my pre-existing FAC. Took more time to get the variation than to have got a SGC in the first place (because - wait for it - my force decided to 'clear' the (c/f rifle approved) land for my proposed S1 gun with normal shotgun cartridges). Now you've picked yourself up and stopped laughing I'm NOT going to tell you that the county's biggest clay pigeon ground is in the centre of this land because you'll only collapse again. Anyway, eventually I got the gun. There are some things to consider though if this is a route you fancy. A condition will (should) be on your FAC allowing you to use the gun for clay pigeon so it's perfectly ok to use it for clays. However, as pointed out by previous posters, you can't use a S1 gun for game or wildfowl so it's fine for pigeons, roughshooting or bunnies off a combine at harvest time, but if like me you then get the opportunity to try duck and game shooting you're stuck. And of course if you want to change the gun you need a variation etc, Eventually I disposed of it and got a SGC. Now I can swap and acquire to my hearts content and fill my cabinet with shotguns if I wish. Moral of the story is - when applying for a FAC get a coterminous SGC even if you don't want one then just pick up an old .410 for £25 and stick it in your cabinet till the day when you want a shotgun.

Q. Why doesn't the FAC just incorporate a S2 SGC so an FAC holder can use S1 or S2 firearms and if you don't want S1 stuff you simply apply for a SGC? - or am I missing something?

Bigger question: why do you need the stricter requirements of S1 for rifles?
