ATV / Quad Tyres? What design?

I'm looking at a new set of tyres for the quad.

What is the most effective type of tyre for use on the hill? i.e. over heather, tussock grasses etc. Also, wet boggy sections too.

From what i can see, excluding 'turf' tyres, there are really two main designs that most tread patterns seem to follow:

All-terrain (traditional looking tyre - design looks like a mud tyre for a truck)
Mud (very open design with large 'paddles' providing traction)

What is the consensus? What might be most suitable for my use case?
Anyone recommend any specific tyres?
 
These on one of my sons quads are very effective in mud and wet grass, however it does have a 54%GR to be able to turn them in sticky stuff. Don't know the make and he's on holiday so can't find out for a fortnight.

They look a lot like Kenda bearclaws, aggressive tyre and get in the mud/bogs. The tread pattern pulls dirt in the throes it outwards and are great at self cleaning so they don't get covered in mud

That looks like a well useful piece of kit,, I could really use something like that.:thumb:

It was for sale but the spec makes it too expensive for most folk, hence it not being sold. The spec of it is really good with a lot of parts imported from the states.

The list is endless but just off the top of my head,
350D rear axle (very strong)
4" swinging arm stretch
12" rims
All new tyres
Snorkel
Cam
Hot shot CDI
Uprated cam chain
Rear brake delete
All bearings and seals replaced
54% gear reduction
heavy duty clutches (both)
LED Light bar
LED headlights
Winch with synthetic rope
Suspension lift
Body lift
Disc brake conversion
500 foreman master cylinder

There's a lot more but I can't remeber it all to be honest .It's built to American mud spec, no doubt one of our American cousins on here will know what this quad is all about.

Kenda bear claw are a good option , had them on my 300 with spacers on , got them as big and wide as poss and would go most places , good luck , Arron

Nice upgrades there... if I had the money ;) family friend had a bombardier ds650 that was highly modded, came out 3rd in the UK in a power shootout so I've got a good idea what your talking about

Yes, it's a good quad, unfortunately he spent too much money on it to ever get back. It was up for app£2950 with a reserve of £2600 I think, but although close no takers. It cost way over that to biuld :lol: . Only reason for the sale was he's newly married and his dear wife wants to go quading with us, but not in the mud. So he needs a registered TRX420 or 500 to put on PLG for greenlaning :doh: I think he's going to have to keep it and save a little more for another quad :rofl:

Apologies toller, if your not too worried about chewing a bit of grass the bearclaws or the k299 will suit, if you get stuck your doing something wrong lol. Avoid anything like the diamond or X pattern, they won't get you anywhere!

I've got a set of Kenda bearclaw's on my Honda foreman 450. They'll pretty much go anywhere.
ive had a red stag on the back coming off the hill and had to go through some wet areas and it handled it no bother.
 
I did a lot of research on the same thing and I ended up with a set of BKT Wing tyres!!! They are without doubt the best thing out there for the application you described.

They look far better on the quad than in the pictures! I have only been stuck once with them and that was due to somebody getting stuck in a bog before me and i lost all momentum.

No worries!

Some good advice in there anyway. I'm wary about increasing the weight of my tyres too much. Not from going up in size - some of the more aggressive patterns seem to weigh a ton according to the specs. Definitely don't want to get into changing gear ratios etc!!

I think the bear claw / 'paddle' pattern will be more effective than 'diamond pattern' type.

Kenda executioners are the dogs danglies but they are on the dear side. They are the equivalent of tractor tread for quad bikes. They are noisy on the road though and you won't want to go over 25mph
 
also i managed to get stuck crossing a ditch in the kenda executioners but the winch got me out. So whatever you get the most reliable thing is to have a winch and anchor
 
Bearclaws everytime for me......On my old Honda 450 (haven't got it now) I put the oversize bearclaws on.
Basically the tyre size on the back went on the front and even bigger on the back. It made it more stable to ride as well as go anywhere.

In one instance (which I do not recommend) we had one red on the front,one red on the back and dragging another four. And when I say we I mean driver and passenger.
