I'm pleased to say that my stalking trip to Glen Lyon this year went without any mishap. SD members will recall that last year after stalking and shooting a stag on the Monday lunch time I slipped and broke my ankle which not only put an end to my stalking holiday but for all my game shooting too.
Unfortunately because of storm Arwin the road up Glen Lyon to our estate was out of order which necessitated an hours extra traveling time to get there driving along loch Tay and then over the hill to Bridge of Belgie. Anyway, what an excellent four days I had with the weather being perfect apart from a little drizzle on the the last day which, apparently was the beginning of storm Babet which as we all now know has brought considerable damage across the country and especially so here in Aberdeenshire.
The estate now has a new stalker George, who is no stranger to the estate and stalking.. Our first spy produced many stags some still holding hinds and the odd bachelors hoping to take any opportunity of having their wicked way with any loose hind. The estate is split into two bets and this day we were on the East beat. After our spy George laid out the plan for the day. Initially we headed out to a group of deer further up and much higher up the hill. After a good walk we came upon a shootable stag with hinds near to the Finn Glen burn and in an ideal place for us to approach. However, they decided to move somewhat and towards us and then settled down quite close. This made our approach even more difficult given the calm weather. But patience is the virtue and after a short crawl and waiting for him to stand up and present me a clear shot the 7.08 did the job. My first and not the last stag of my stalking holiday in Glen Lyon and with no mishap.
Donsider.
