Out of interest is there any story behind the Name Barvus?
The short version is A very simple one…..it’s Cornish for “Bearded” 😉👍

The long version…Pre-covid I lead another life… I was Cornwalls leading producer of quality sausages for around 15yrs. Myself and my family put everything into creating and building a brand that initially at my protest utilised my mugshot!

We were set to launch with with Tesco, Morrisons & CoOp in March 2020 with a forecast £500k of new sales in retail but instead were forced too close the gates. Turns out the Black Horse is only by your side when the going is good to firm. Despite the solid £500k or new orders in retail they pulled our finance package as our £1.8m in the hospitality trade made them nervous.

When I 1st closed the gates I wanted to lock myself away….I didn’t want to se anyone, I felt so ashamed of myself for all the people who I had let down. I came close to shaving off my trademark bushy beard in the hope that folk wouldn’t recognise me.

With time I realised that there was no reason to be ashamed. In fact quite the opposite. What my family and myself had achieved was remarkable. I had done everything possible to make a success out of it and everything I could to save it. The closure was simply out of my control and the circumstances were unprecedented.

I found knifemaking a when at rock bottom as a way to give me somethIng positive to focus on. A great family, Stalking & knifemaking helped pull me through that difficult time and. Come out feeling positive about the future & my whiskers remained in tact….. I am the still the bearded one….BARVUS

That’s a great story, I think so many of us who work in the rural sector like me have absolutely no real experience or comprehension of how covid snatched the rug from under so many business’s and made life in towns and city’s pretty hellish. Fair play and best of luck!

They were tricky times, for sure.

Both my wife and I self employed running our own small business, as it did with lots of other folk, everything stopped, order books emptied, chasing money, phones ringing off the hook, it wasn't great.

Barvus knows this all too well.

I was lucky in the sense that I am a Freeman of The Company of Cutlers here in Sheffield, they knew people should be working and they lobbied Government and the Secretary of State for Business issued them with a letter which essentially granted permission to work, that was circulated and I kept one in my car and went back to work.

Might you have a photo of your knife with the glowy bit glowing please?

Not sure why I wasn't following you on Insta but I am now 👍

What a great and unexpected origin story for your new business. Pleased you found a new vocation but those circumstances must have been awful to pull through at the time, especially when you were on the cusp of getting into supermarkets. As an aside, I'm sad I'll never great to try those pork and cyder sausages!

I wouldn’t wish the experience on anyone. I lost so very much even now I have the odd off day where it all grates my gears. The past has a habit of creeping up on you when you try and move on.

That said I started with nothing & built and dominated my pocket of the world for a very longtime. I worked with household name celebrities, fed & met royalty. Trained some fantastic young talent, raised awareness and funds for local causes… experiences I would never have had were it not for that business

Knifemaking for me is great therapy…I enjoy making unique pieces that have a story behind them. Function 1st and foremost but custom knives should call to their owners to be picked up and used. I would love to do it full-time but for now it’s a hobby that helps pay for my shooting habit 😂👍

Great to see some local talent in the knife sector!

Thats a sad story, but also uplifting.

I wonder how many others took up hobbies during lock down, I did, knife making!
But only as a hobby, I would describe mine as 'functional' but a few friends have them, not up to your standard, not bad for someone on the wrong side of the Tamar ;)

I do feel I had a head start having held a knife as an extension of my hand for literally years, even decades of my life….but It comes down to practice, practice, practice really

I’m sure you make a great knife fella….although I suspect the edge is always on the top 🤔….#jamfirst 😂👍
