BASC Guest Days

For those that are members, you may be aware of the (I think four to six) annual guest days, BASC put on at Bisley; curtesy of the British Sporting Rifle Club.

If you have never used this particular range, it is worth a visit.

I went to one earlier in the year.

Each day has about 30 guests, and there are half a dozen BASC RCOs meandering about, so you are well 'supervised'.

There is a 100 yard range for 'plinking', zeroing, bore sighting and testing scope fit. It is a useful thing, and the RCOs are on hand to provide almost 'man-to-man' marking. For the second time in recent times, I have seen and made use of the latest 'must have' - the Garmin chronograph.

You get just enough change from £600 to buy yourself a box of 'man size' tissues, into which you will want to freely weep.😭

Any hoo.

There is also the 'Running Deer" target. A counter-intuitive thing for most Stalkers (and yes, I get the quick second shot scenario).

Magazine with two, (all free hand with no sticks), deer appears and 'stands', fire a round, deer takes off, fire the second shot. Repeat until you have fired off twelve shots. Harder than it looks, made worse by the fact that they print off your 'score' and give it to you to take away...

Break for lunch then the afternoon session.
Running Boar with a .22 for those that fancy it, or the "Stalker's Test", for those who don't...

Stationary Deer target at 100 yards

Magazine loaded with two rounds.

Two shots prone.
Two shots sitting.
Two shots kneeling - if you are over 40 years of age - for the love of God, take knee pads.
Two standing (sticks may be used).
Two off the bench (unsupported).

Again, your crimes are evidenced, by the production of a printout of your results...

A gentle reminder for those who are minded to attend.

Take your:
FAC
BASC membership card
SCC card (if you have it - if not you will be assessed on the day).
If using home loads - your endorsement on the SCC, or be prepared to sign the declaration and have your rounds tested.
A sense of humour.

Do not take HME rifle/ammunition combination - they will 'chrono' suspect gear, and will enforce this rule.

All that said - it's not a terrible way to spend a day.

Glad you enjoyed the day @Stalker1962 - fingers crossed the BSRC get a new lease when the current lease expires at the end of the year & you will be able to continue to do so 🤞

The club took the land on that is now the ranges back in 1962 & in the following years have been solely responsible for making them what they are now, having invested not just the time but a significant six figure sum of money on range development and targetry.

It would be difficult, nigh impossible, to think that these facilities would be even half what they are today if the club hadn't developed them.

The facilities the club members enjoy are unrivalled. Members can enjoy range days for plinking, load testing, setting up scopes etc. or they can compete against fellow members in the monthly club matches or annual competitions. Training is available to members of all abilities both informally & by way of structured training days & even old dogs have been known to learn new tricks.

Personally, I joined the club to use the ranges for a bit of setting up, load testing & practicing positional shooting back in the 90's & have learned so much & made some great friends there. I've also learned how to shoot the moving target stuff too 😳

The club has a website www.bsrc.co.uk if anyone wants to find out more.

Just a couple of things that disturbed my sleep overnight...

High Muzzle Energy (HME) - just in case you were unsure of what that means. Herewith a graph which explains it all: about what is, (and is not) allowed at Bisley.

HME_chart_m.jpg

The running Deer target.

It is (in total) twelve shots - six as the deer 'runs' right to left, and then the reverse.

Just looking at the results, it is obvious that I was shooting too low as the 'deer' ran from Left to Right. This resulted in the majority of shots being too low. I am right-handed. It clearly makes a significant difference.:-|

Believe it or not, it’s actually nothing to do with you being right handed. It’ll be a combination of things but your body alignment will most likely be the start of the problem - drop me a PM if you’re likely to be at Bisley on either first Thursday/Friday or second Monday/Tuesday of the Imperial Meeting & I’ll happily give you some tips for your next BASC day 👍

@Donkey Basher

That is kind of you.

I suspect I will have being doing a plethora of things wrong.😜

It was interesting to see the different collection of firearms, folk were using on this discipline. I was just using my Sako 75 B/A in .243

I have an under lever in .38/.357, I wonder if that would improve my chances?

Just a final thought about the day really.

Look out for the bloke with a muzzle brake on his rifle.

Be somewhere else when he is on the point.

Selfish bastards.

It's about time the BSRC commissioned a new club insignia! While the old one exhibited an unfortunate nod to Rudolf it nonetheless had a certain charm. Our current one lacks gravitas and pandas to the sterile Creedmoor owning member as distinct from those with Life Membership and a stutzen in their cabinet.

That said if we don't have a range it's somewhat academic!

Totally agree & have never understood why we ditched 'Rudolph' in favour of some generic graphic depicting a very non-British facsimile of a deer!
