BC Mule Deer

I'm in Reading, and here I stalk in Savernake Forest near Marlborough. Lillooet is pretty out back! Is your guide outfit from the First Nations reserve there?

The town on Lytton, 60km south of Lillooet, was totally wiped off the map in a wildfire 2 years ago.
I was looking to try to find a First Nations Guide as i thought that would suit me better but didn't have any luck with that, not that could fit me in or was very responsive to communications. I'm pretty sure my guide understands what I'm trying to achieve, which is more along the lines of Subsistence Hunter rather than Trophy Hunter. I have no big Texas Ranch to hang a big rack up in, that's not really my thing, it's more about my primeval need to hunt my own food and the connection to nature.

After you get your Mule Deer down, you will get the bug of hunting the Rockies, I got this Mule Deer without a guide in Montana, it can be done, and bears weren't a problem!

Sounds like a great trip, nice Muley! I am 100% sure the bug will get me!! My current shooting partner is my dad, he's 84 but he was still out with me yesterday busting tree rats on a local farm in Kent. But looking longer term I need to start making connections, and I'm thinking perhaps in the future I can go on a few trips with other people and share the costs a bit, could be a good opportunity for all concerned.
There's no deer where we are (East Kent) so my rifle use is smaller calibre stuff (.17HMR and .223Rem), so after BC I'll look to get a variation on the FAC and go rifle shopping. I'm hiring a rifle in BC, just to keep it simple this first time, and my outfitter said it'll probably be his Snowy Mountain 6.5 PRC, so I will be well catered for.

There are syndicates you can join around the UK which would allow for occasional stalking. A lot of guys in the Savernake syndicate live MILES away, but come up in their campers (or with doss bags to stay in the club house) and make a weekend of it. A friend has a partial share in a stalk in Scotland, gets him 12 days a year. Before you get to that point, I suggest some BASC guided stalks.

As for First Nations: they are still a population with a lot of significant social challenges. I was prepared to be impressed if you had managed to source one. My father is a retired Crown Prosecutor in norther BC: 40% of his "customers" were First Nations... they're like 5% of the population.

Sounds like good advice, I did consider doing the DSC1 some time ago but with all the work and family stuff keeping me busy I never got round to it. I'm getting to the point in my life when I'll be able to dedicate a bit more time to life and a bit less to work so over the next few years I should be able to give all this the attention it deserves, fingers crossed. Thanks.

I did get in touch with a First Nations Subsistence Hunter in BC via LinkedIn who offered to take me out for a couple of days with him but I thought I'd get someone set up for the full guide/outfitter experience. It's costing $$$$$$ but this is one of few extravagant 'purchases' over a lot of years of hard work so I'm going for it.

Lytton\ Lillooet country... early September. just to whet your appetite. :)

I'm off to BC in the spring to work for an outfitter in that area, you never know, we might cross paths.

Canada is a big place but its a small world haha.

In any case, good luck! I'm sure it will be an awesome experience.

You never know Fordy. I'll be on the hunt 26/09/24 until early October, and probably there a day or more each end to travel to base at Lillooet from Vancouver depending on flights etc. Hope all goes well for you out there and as you say, you never know! :)

I hope to travel to the US I'm not sure if hunting is on the radar for the first time visiting but It would be nice.

Partner is more of a small game hunter and his dad and grandpa were too I'm sure we could wiggle our way into finding some private land from a relative, Though I do have a friend moving from UK to WI (Partners in IL) so It might work out very well because I cant see that man missing out on a single deer season over there, he will be lost not being able to shoot deer the entire year and as many as he wants.

Will be whitetail obviously but hey they are incredibly closely related. 👌

The US is definitely on my list, and once BC is under my belt that could be next. I plan to do a trip per year if I can afford it. Partnering up to save on some costs will definitely be something I will look into in the future.

A few months ago someone gave me some Canadian shooting magazines, one of which was the hunting and trapping regs. synopsis for BC. It’s 81 pages and covers everything, very interesting, especially when regs. for this country would probably fit on one side of A4 paper. See if your outfitter can send you a copy or you might be able to get one direct GOV.BC.CA/HUNTING. Good luck with your trip. Paul

I sent off my 75 CDN for an archive check on my dads Canadian naturalisation "proof of" last week as he stated he was naturalised when he enlisted in 1940 into the Canadian Sappers. If it proves positive I can then claim Canadian citizenship

Just remember that proof of Canadian citizenship doesn't equate to instant hunting privileges in all of Canada. Each province/territory looks after their own wildlife (other that migratory birds) and regulations as well as residency requirements, which vary with each jurisdiction.

Yep, already have a copy downloaded some time ago. Fortunately I am going with a well known Outfitter so I am not overly concerned with understanding all rules and regulations. We have already been through the dates and what constitutes 'legal' for harvest.
