Beckham Knighted

I’m no fan of football

Nor a fan of manufactured ‘heroes’

So was not a fan of Beckham

Until that is

When saw a video of him getting up to make a speech at some dinner somewhere

Now, I don’t suppose he was used to making a speech, and it is a challenge for anyone

He must therefore have been very nervous

He had the grace though, under all that pressure, to step aside for a waitress coming the other way

It showed, what I thought to be, an instinctive concern for others, no matter what pressure he was under

A simple act perhaps

However it caused me to see him in a quite different light

Interesting, and not surprising from what I've seen of the gentleman

I am not a football supporter, never have been
I'm also a native of Norn Irn but found myself in the, initially uncomfortable, position of regularly attending England home games for several years
I was doing it as a favour for a workmate who was in the England Supporters Club
He needed me to use his home match tickets if he was on a business trip over the date of the fixture
Something to do with preserving his loyalty points - I didn't care, I got to go to Wembley for free and grew to enjoy my days out
I had a surprisingly good time at the matches, of course I was on the receiving end of some good-natured banter about being "a paddy" sitting among "the enemy", but it was a laugh - even if the standard of the football sometimes disappointed - I really felt sorry for all the die-hard England fans, whose loyalty was never rewarded with the success they craved for their team & country

Anyway, the bit of the action that caught my attention the most was seeing, the now Sir, David Beckham's behaviour after the final whistle
He, sometimes alone, walked around the entire touchline waving to and applauding the fans
He made a point, as far as I could tell, after each match to throw his shirt to some kid in the crowd - the first time I saw him do this he gave his shirt to a kid who clearly had Down's Syndrome
The difference between him and some of the other players, especially the noticeably huffy & ill-tempered loutish Rooney, was striking
Prior to this I had held footballers in low regard, but have to say that I was impressed by Beckham, he seemed to genuinely care
Of course, it could have been an act, but at least he was consistent & seemed to make an effort
Fair play to him

Queuing for 12 plus hours along the Embankment, like other ordinary folk, to file past & pay his respects to the late Queen has earned him a great deal of respect…unlike some other so called “celebrities” who, it would appear, may have exerted undue influence to beat him to it.

He's kept his nose and boots clean throughout a successful and interesting career. That and a "boy next door" personer, allied to the Beckham brand ensured a Knighthood was always on the cards at some point.

Well done is what I say.

K

I rarely watch football. However....

He is, of course working class in his origins and his fame has been built on his footballing skills and his good looks. However, despite this, after his football playing days were over, he has impressed me with his standing and increasing maturity and was instrumental in bringing the Olympics to London amongst other things. So, like some rewards that are dished out these days, I think his knighthood is fair. I venture to say that he would have made a better ambassador to the USA than Mandelson.

Not a football fan but admire him. He appears an honest and genuine guy. Ali G did an interview of them both for comic relief i think. They both showed a good sense of humour.
