Beginner Bow Setup

I’m interested in getting into bow hunting in Europe and was wondering if anyone here has experience with it.


For those who started from scratch, what would you recommend as a good beginner setup? I’m happy to invest a bit more upfront if it means buying a quality bow that will last for several years rather than something I’ll outgrow or want to upgrade within the first year.


I’d also appreciate any recommendations on essential starter kit (arrows, release, sight, rest, etc.) or any brands/models you’ve found reliable.

Go to a archery store get measured start with a pull weight you can handle 50lb you will never need to hunt above 70, buy cheap buy twice,

Maybe go to the bucks archery centre in Aston Clinton (buckland)
My son got his recurve bow from there and I know they do other stuff which is less about targets, but not sure if they do full hunting rigs.

Go to an archery shop and get measured.

Start with a cheap simple set up to practice with and see if you stick with it. It requires A LOT of practice.

Get some coaching. Cannot recommend this enough.

Don’t buy your final technical rig with all the bells and whistles until you’re at least a year in and can reliably put 3 arrows into at least a 4” group at 30m.

I’d also suggest finding a local Field Archery club.

They will have an outdoor course with 3d animals with unpredictable ranges - which is exactly what you need for practice.

I started with a cheap compound 50 lb. untill I was competent at 30 yrds then moved on to a PSE Stinger this bow is fully adjustable so you can start at a low poundage and work up as I did to 65 pound. Things that make a difference to consistant accuracy are a good release aid and good sights.
Arrows are very important to consistancy and a good bow shop will match the right arrow to you and your bow I would advise carbon arrows.
When it comes to practice dont over do it and try to get one mentor for advice. I had a great chap with lots of experience and he advised me to shoot 3 batches of 4 arrows then rest a while and repeat. Lota of info on Youtube but try not to get too technical, in my opinion archery is very basic and good form is 100 time better than lots of expensive kit.

I have seen so many people start up, buy thousands of pounds of kit, and then constantly buy new kit thinking this will magically make them accurate, without ever taking the time to develop basic form.

I’d almost say it’s worth starting with a super basic recurve set up (can be had for under £200) and developing good habits there.
