Best dogs

I had a cocker spaniel that would go through hell for a pheasant, but literally stepped over a freshly shot roe like it wasn't there, gave zero f***s about deer.

I’ve got a pointer /lab cross and he’s hard work , the friendliest mutt you’ll ever meet but mental and tough on foxes and deer , at 1year old I let him go on a sika stag after a guy wounded it to see how brave he was and I was totally shocked how he handled it and had it down immediately . They need a lot of work . Had a cross breed 15year ago and she was a cross lab and not once in all the years I had her did she let me down , very easy trained and finding multiple foxes at 8 months and she cost me 5p luck money to the guy because he couldn’t get rid of her . Absolute bargain . I’ve always thought that the W in GWP stood for ā€œ wired wrongā€ 😁

I Only use labs now ! They don't 100% need deer hunting in their lines , take them out and the dog will learn what you want it to do and not do - you just show it what you want . The breed I prefer now started retrieving lost fishing gear in frozen sea , yet also the favoured choice in just about anything and a burning desire to help in most tasks . Downsides ? If they cant eat it they want to f*** it !
I take pups from the best working Gun Dog kennels / breeders and must come from shooting lines , I don't need birds picking but i need a good nose and drive
Previous i had a GWP , never ever again ! IMHO they swing from dangerous killers to dopy kids

Firstly I said stop, not hold.
Secondly the deer is wounded, not fully functional.
Many spaniels can catch and kill wounded roe, fallow does, prickets, sika hinds and then stop and harass wounded stags enough that you can get up to them. A lot of labs are in the low 20kgs now, my spaniel dog is just over 20kg. I have seen some very good labs track and work deer, but I have also seen spaniels that are harder than 90% of labs

Seen some mental GWPs over the years lol but also some not so mental ones they do make me smile though 🤣

A big enough one so if you have badger setts or fox earth's on your ground he or she can't disappear down one if you want to work them free
I used my HWV as they are used to cast out and find on the air not track on a line. In my experience when the cover is quiet thick and waist height and your not quiet sure of the strike sight a dog that ranges works best for me
I sadly lost my bitch Meg last year at 13 who was a genital sole but would fined deer fine in her own time.
Otis who is 7, now how can I put itšŸ¤” I know, is a hooligan came at 8 months and already fixated with pheasants but after a few outings learnt that deer taste lovely and knows what he is looking for.
Same breed two totally different dogs?
Not much help I know

If there's one thing I can honestly say about GWP's, they're bellends.

But, I wouldn't be without mine. From a family dog, dog to take out walking and more importantly, working, i really wouldn't be without him. He carries my fox's, he will mark, point, stalk and try to carry smaller deer species.

I have however noticed pointers tend to like eating things they shouldn't. That included items of clothing!
And when he says ā€˜bellends’ , he actually means ā€˜ absolute dickheads!’

Unfortunately I'm allergic to dogs, however I had a man help me locate a Sika spiker up in Lairg with his Bavarian mountain hound. Found the deer in minutes and at the time I think it was only about 1 year old. Very impressive dog. Looking into immunotherapy to get rid of the dog allergy and if it works this is the breed I will be going for.
