Best dogs

I’mBest deer dogs I’ve been around have always been labs
Would love one of my own but my old lab just wasn’t interested in deer when we tried him
till dragging it then he insisted on trying to lay on it and roll all over it so he just didn’t work out
Would be great if the new one is up to it but will have to see how she comes along she’s just 12 weeks now so a bit early yet

Firstly I said stop, not hold.
Secondly the deer is wounded, not fully functional.
Many spaniels can catch and kill wounded roe, fallow does, prickets, sika hinds and then stop and harass wounded stags enough that you can get up to them. A lot of labs are in the low 20kgs now, my spaniel dog is just over 20kg. I have seen some very good labs track and work deer, but I have also seen spaniels that are harder than 90% of labs

Unfortunately I'm allergic to dogs, however I had a man help me locate a Sika spiker up in Lairg with his Bavarian mountain hound. Found the deer in minutes and at the time I think it was only about 1 year old. Very impressive dog. Looking into immunotherapy to get rid of the dog allergy and if
I think I’m allergic to Drathaar, but I still have two of the b*#^~+ds!!!

Hard to find but does anyone use an (IWS) Irish water spaniel. These are great tracking dogs used by RAF. They are big heavy beasts and learn very quickly.

GWP is by far the best, remember having a deer dog isn’t all about tracking and finding lost deer. The dog has to have the ability to pull deer down and kill them id love to see a cocker taking on a stag 😂
The other plus is they kill any wildlife , so taking the dog for a walk is always interesting and never relaxing. Oh and I can also confirm GWP pups and seatbelts are a bad mix.

Might be interesting to see a German Gin trap take on a lowland red stag to. Wiry draught excluder tracks, finds and has guts enough to nip in and out to hold it in one spot. Had Borders that would bowl a Roe over and hold it.
