Best Precision Rifle Action for PRS Matches

Open class is rich man's game. In other classes it's hard to beat factory rifles using MDT ACC chassis. Especially Savage, if you live in a country that has more relaxed approach to prefit barrels than UK.

Interesting article

Built a few using Impact actions which are really pleasant

Surprised there are not more Borden actions used - the Mountaineer for instance would make a very good base for a steel plate rifle

The Steel plate shooting scene is a very fickle place todays “best ever” is almost forgotten about a week later with the newest and shiniest ever becoming the darling must have

Still, it’s a great place to source of second hand parts at killer prices as the hummingbirds skit from best to best ever 😂😂

A dependable cheap action has to be Tikka or Howa as a starter and if built correctly will stand side by side with any custom action

I chose the impact action

I can’t really remember why

However it wasn’t as a result of my great wealth of knowledge and experience

That said @Ronin built an absolute cracker with it

I think, on reflection, what swayed me was the integral 20MOA rail, as I believed, probably incorrectly, that it was better than a pinned one

I wonder why nobody has launched kind of "assisted bolt opening" to eliminate the shooter input on the rifle while cycling the action. Which seems to be main grief among PRS crowd.

Perhaps they need to work on wrist strength and fundamentals rather than whine about bolt lift

Are we suggesting PRS chaps are limp wristed? Or have they tired out wrist muscles on other activities? 🤔

I think one may have to draw own conclusions and inferences on a individual basis

Many complaints for instance about ATX bolt lift which is only slightly heavier than a traditional two lug - yet won many many comps stateside and also served the UK A I team members very successfully

One may also have thought UK shooters would support a UK built rifke system,,,

go figure ,,,

The US boys were honking online that the ATX was US built and some had crap US quality and crap US customer service when they complained. News to me.

Minor issue with mag height on early models that was easily rectified

The rifles performed flawlessly

The gripes stateside have been on the main with enhancement to the first versions that were brought out soon after the first batches were delivered

Maybe there should have been a hold on the earliest versions and the enhancements carried out (quick release on butt and cheek ajust )

But I’ve no complaints with mine whatsoever

Bit of an old thread I know, but I’m interested in a rifle that would be good for both prs and nra fullbore rifle shooting.

I recently got to shoot an AI at an nra event and loved it. Would this platform be suitable for both types of shooting?

Thanks.

My thoughts are drawn to the Scottish Tarmac Rally Championship
Specifically the Mull rally

Across the classes of entries you have Farm yard prepared Austin Minis, privateer MK2 Escorts, right the way through to Former Group N and WRC cars.

Who dominated and won the rally 9 times and dominated the leader board over a 15 year period?
Local chap in a MK2 Escort.

Admittedly as he won more and more and sponsors poured in it morphed from dog box manual into a Millington powered, sequential monster probably running well into the hundreds of thousands.

Point being.
He won in a 40yr old 2wd chassis against 4wd WRC cars

Guys that win, win.
Top tier competitors in any field use what kit they are paid to use

Think Tiger Woods would have failed to achieve his goals if he had suddenly switched to Calloways or Ping in the 90s?

We get asked to source actions for builds.
Almost exclusively because the customer has read that A.N.Other shooter is using one “so it must be good”…
More often than not they have never seen one, used one or even handled one to see if it feels “right ”

That baffles me.
Of all the custom actions out there they all have their pros and cons.
Mostly just features of design.
Pinned or integrated recoil lugs and rails.
Sako extractors, single plunger, double plunger..
EDM vs Broached Raceways
Coned nose,
Two lugs, three lugs, four lugs…
Tubular, hexagonal,
Detachable bolt handle, one piece bolts..
Left feed, right eject
Detachable trigger hanger, bolted trigger, pinned trigger..

Arguably none of it has a major impact on performance compared to barrel and consumables choice.

But I would love to see some actual analysis on how one action impacts precision over another

Shoot one over a sensible data set (hundreds)
Swap that barrel onto another brand of action and repeat the process, change no other significant variables …
Repeat.

We all love shiny things but I am convinced that a lot of kit choice is significant because it gives the user a mental advantage compared to previous kit choices

Removing the niggling doubt that your action, barrel choice, powder choice, chassis, bipod, scope etc is the reason you are not a world class shot

Think many forgetting about the major component..... the nut behind the butt!

Operator surely biggest variable

As Ronin says a well looked after T3 against a custom action ...in the right hands ?
