best viht powder for 243

Well here goes a Finnish opinion.

We are Limited to 2kg powder in The house at any time but financially and logistically this makes some sense as well.

I own:

222rem
308
30-06
6.5x55
.243

The powders i stock: n135 and n550.

with a good overlap those powders load almost every bullet in every rifle i own.

for the .243, n550 is a good powder to experiment as it will load anything from 58gr vmax to 109 grain berger.

does n540 generally give me a little better performance and sometimes accuracy on 124-150 grain in the 30-06? yea sure.

does n560 get me more performance in some of the others? definitely.

is n135 slow for my 222? yea..... the 0.12 euro LOS 55gr fmj love the stuff tho! and sending a 45 gr S&B bullet with a compressed load at over 1100m/s sure takes care of the vermin.

Still get moa or less loads in all of them (exept the AK in 308 but its AK...)

for me powder choise affects millimeters rather than centimeters in accuracy once iam done fiddling and in most applications velocity is a bit overrated. Most of the time i dont need the flattest trajectory out of a 308 or 6.5x55.

If that does matter to you, pick a bullet weight and a target velocity and run somw free software like GRT with various powders to see how they work out.

You still have to work up a load!!! i hope i dont need to mention that.

but GRT (or quickload if you wanna pay for it) will give you: rough velocity, case fill, % burned etc.

you would want to look for a powder that gives between 90 and 104% case fill at Pmax -10 in my experience. This is not real world results but i find it gives a good feel for how suitable a powder is for what you want to do.

Just DONT go loading wathever you see in The simulation without cross referencing with a manual. I had nobody teaching me back in the day and one day decided to try 100gr OTCE in the 30-06, GRT gave nice pressures so i loaded that range without consulting a manual. Turns out even my starting load was well over the max in the manual i didnt bother to check... guess how long it took me to get that bolt open 🤣
