Hi all.
Just joined after reading a few good discussions on here.
Im from somerset uk, dont deer stalk as of yet but in future plans.
Fox and other vermin shooting using my trusty 223.
My main shooting seems to be squirrels which i shoot alot of.
Love my centre fire reloading aswell as my target shooting.
if your local feel free to say hi.

Welcome to the forum. I'm just up in Gloucestershire. Shooting squirrels - that's how I got my first permission to shoot deer nearly 15 years ago. They both wreck trees, so they go hand in hand.

My advice would be to look to add a larger centrefire for shooting foxes in windy conditions. I have a .25-06 for example, but a .243 or 6.5 something would also be acceptable. With the any other lawful quarry condition on your certificate, that makes you deer legal without mentioning deer at all. If you're lucky, it will make the process a bit easier than applying for a deer calibre rifle using deer as the good reason.

Hi buddy.
Thanks for the reply. My renewal is due soon so spoke to my FO he said very simular to yourself so im either putting in for 243 or 308 prob the later then itll be a rifle for long range target aswell.
Landowner wants deer controlled more than the current guy is doing as the population has boomed

If .243 or .308 are the choices, I'd go .308 every time for deer. Slow and heavy leaves a much cleaner carcass with less bruising. Have you considered a Creedmoor if it'll be for long range? I know they're a bit fashionable at the moment but they use the same bullet as the 6.5x55, which is a very time proven hunting cartridge.

Ive played around with the 6.5 but think rather have 308 persinally
