Blaser or Sako?

I would agree but I fixed the above for you! 😂

It’s the tang spring loaded safety/decocker that ruins them and Blasers for me! Not horrendous but just not as good at the 202 safety (which had its critics too I guess)

(sorry to be high jacking a thread) Have you had both a 202 and a 404? I've just been doing a bit of research and a decent second hand 202 is about in my price range for my first rifle.

Has anyone got a Sauer 404? I don't see them mentioned very often but they look like a decent alternative to the Blaser and better than the Sako S20.
They have a completely different feel to them than a Blaser. The pistol grip is a lot slimmer. You really need to handle both to see which you like better.

I have an excellent and comprehensively researched article on the R8 written by a first class hunter, engineer and French trained sniper

Can’t attach it as even in PDF format it is too large a file

PM me if you would like it

Hi team
Okay, late to the thread but it's interesting so here we go. Firstly Aussies aren't big on Blaser, they love Tikka, Sako and Remington. Once they shoot one they usually sell their other rifles to buy one.
I wanted a Blaser and bought a shop demo 30-06 Makura Ulrich Takedown/Blaser R93 ($4000 under RRP) with some advice from the guys on this site, I had never owned a Blaser and it was the most expensive rifle I had bought. Firstly LOP too long for me as it was made for giants, had it shortened. Fit is a must no matter what the rifle cost.
My lovely wife bought me a 25-06 barrel/insert, so two calibers, one very small travel case (type C), two scope mounts and two scopes, NICE, functional and very very easy to travel with. Sako does not do what Blaser do in this regard, full confidence in Blaser. How do they shoot, as good as cheaper rifles I have owned. Kind of like owning a Porsche but, yeah a turbo Golf might take you but it's still a VW.
Bought another R93 recently secondhand, a Professional, still dear, still great, sold the barrels and mounts it came with and it owes me Aud$1500, scoped w/ my 25-06 barrel included, can't go wrong. Now those deals are extremely rare and I was in the right place at the right time and broke up a significant purchase and sold on most of the parts keeping only what I needed to assemble a second rifle.
The problem I see with upgrading at this point to a nice timber R8 for my next significant birthday (60th, currently 55), is that I will need to sell most of my rifles to get anything better than what I have and that puts me into serious Mauser money, AUD $25000.
I own Tikka T3X, Mauser M12 Expert, Carl Gustaf 1900, Weatherby Mark V, CZ 557, Remington 700 and a couple of Blaser R93 and they all shoot, so do Sako. They are all a joy to shoot and own however, since owning the Blaser most now live in the safe while the Blaser or Mauser are hunting.
I think most people try to rationalise the idea of cost, most rifles are not modular, are not switch barrel and do not hold their value like a Blaser, it is that simple.
If you want a Blaser and cost is the factor, buy secondhand, scratch your itch, you can always trade up (or down) and you will not lose your money unless you damage it.
Cheers

You reckon it was worthwhile moving from the R93 to the R8?
Cheers

The R8 is heavier. But the radial locking mechanism is more robust.
I changed over when my R93‘s started to age. With the .222 I regret it a bit as she was a beauty and wonderfully lightweight.

Would I buy a used R93? Perhaps, but certainly not in a magnum calibre.

yep without a doubt, R93 are decent pieces of kit, R8 pro in match barrel different animal, if. i had to find a fault the R93 in 6.5 x 55 can chuck it out for recoil, the heavier pro in the heavier match barrel and the stock do smoot out the edges on recoil etc when out stalking i carry 2 trigger/mag units with 3 in each that’s good enough for me

Oogh, that‘s a heavy beast!
I pefer standard contour barrels and the regular professional stock. I like to keep things lightweight. But this is a matter personal preference of course.

My current setup in .308. Neat and sleek.

Nice piece of kit there steff

222 243. 6.5 X 55 308 with Match Barrels
22LR 22 WMR 22 hornet .204 with standard barrels

22 rimmy 22 WMR are just barrels, bolt head and mag
All work perfectly I got a spare 22 rimmy mag changed to RWS ammunition as I had a issue with different size ammo from CCI got over that bump now all back to normal👍

Other side is swapping from day to night scopes is so easy and it works spot on, wouldn't go back to any other makes to be honest

If I could change anything it would be to have one screw thread 15/18 : 1 threaded mods are hard to find as is the price to swallow you can pay an extra £75 for a 22 rimmy mod in 15:1

I used to have a Sako and have given my new Blaser a proper try for the first time today.

Both are absolutely fine and I would say equally accurate. I prefer the Blaser for the following reasons though:

1. I now have one rifle, with one trigger, one safety system etc. before I had three rifles with different triggers, safeties etc

2. My Sako used to eject cartridges in to the scope, dinting them. This wasn’t a major issue but not great.

3. The Blaser professional stock (never tried the success) design is amazing. Comb a good height for smaller scopes and recoil is next to nothing. .375 H and H recoils the same as my old Parker Hale 30-06

4. Ability to break down for travelling

Is it worth the extra cost though? Probably not. I was lucky and found a good second hand deal.

I think the accuracy and trigger are equally good on both rifles.

Do you need to travel with the rifle and break it down into a case? Yes? Get the blaser.

Otherwise it’s an expensive way to shoot average groups.

Blaser are very nice indeed, but are they that much £££££'s better than a Sako?
If you've got the disposable go for it I suppose. Personally I would go with a Sako all day long.

I‘m sure you know what you‘re talking about.

Bottom left is nice 👌🏻

With hand loads I have seen the same from sako and tikka, many, many times.

Equally seen Blasers on range day/competitions that won’t go under an inch.

In general I don’t think they are more accurate than most decent factory rifles. The USP is more concerning the take down/switch barrel ability-which is very impressive.

If you don‘t want to spend it then don‘t. But if you want one you‘ll have to. And you won‘t be disappointed.
Sako on the other hand creates the illusion of premium which it is clearly not. All it is is heavy, even more so than the Blaser.
