I have for sale a standard 17mm profile R8 barrel in 30-06.

Price is now £300 with £25 for RFD transfer if needed. I'm open to sensible offers too.

This came with a rifle I purchased recently and since fitting a semi weight barrel in 6.5x55 I have decided that is my preferred profile.
I have shot around 30 rounds through it since I got it. It was OK but not outstanding with the Geco Zero (about 1.5 inch groups @ 100). Handloads with the 130g TTSX and RS50 were tightening up nicely with a really excellent velocity of over 3200 without any pressure signs at all. 4 shots out of 5 were certainly within an inch and I think I pulled the last shot then ran out of ammo to test so stopped.

The barrel is threaded 15x1 without a spigot, I don't have the thread protector for it. The external finish is quite good, it is used but there is no external rust. I have bore scoped it and the throat looks good, almost new and the rifling is crisp and sharp but there are some areas of moderator induced pitting. Its a shame really as I dont think this barrel will have fired that many shots in its lifetime judging by the condition of the throat. I'm not sure how much the pitting will affect accuracy as some of the most accurate rifles I have seen have had barrels worse than this. I suspect it will shoot fine for ages if its kept clean once a load has been worked up.

Obviously you will need a slot for a 30-06 barrel on your FAC to buy this. It would be perfect for someone who wants a barrel for the odd larger deer or annual driven boar trip. The target was the last group I shot with the barrel on Sunday with minimal load development.

Interested in this. Would you fancy a stalk down here in good old Lincolnshire to deliver it.
The barrel is yours if you want it…. I’m open to a road trip but it would depend when, might not be able to make down that way for a few months… Would you need a moderator?

Out of curiosity I took this 30-06 barrel to the range today with some thrown together loads using the small number of Hornady 165g soft points, 165 SSTs and some 180g Speer BTSP that I had lying around.
I shot four consecutive groups from a sandbag and rear rest that can be seen below (providing I manage to attach them effectively!) The barrel was allowed to cool between shots. It is quite apparent to me that this barrel seems to like heavy or at least long bullets. The main groups were 5 shots each and measured 1.0 MOA for the 165g SP, 0.714MOA for the 165g SST and 0.639MOA for the 180g BTSP. I then shot a 3 shot group with the Geco Zero lead free factory ammo and those went into 0.195 MOA!
So in essence I can say with a good degree of confidence that this barrel does in fact shoot very well indeed given the very modest asking price and total absence of load development.
