I have for sale a standard 17mm profile R8 barrel in 30-06.
Price is now £300 with £25 for RFD transfer if needed. I'm open to sensible offers too.
This came with a rifle I purchased recently and since fitting a semi weight barrel in 6.5x55 I have decided that is my preferred profile.
I have shot around 30 rounds through it since I got it. It was OK but not outstanding with the Geco Zero (about 1.5 inch groups @ 100). Handloads with the 130g TTSX and RS50 were tightening up nicely with a really excellent velocity of over 3200 without any pressure signs at all. 4 shots out of 5 were certainly within an inch and I think I pulled the last shot then ran out of ammo to test so stopped.
The barrel is threaded 15x1 without a spigot, I don't have the thread protector for it. The external finish is quite good, it is used but there is no external rust. I have bore scoped it and the throat looks good, almost new and the rifling is crisp and sharp but there are some areas of moderator induced pitting. Its a shame really as I dont think this barrel will have fired that many shots in its lifetime judging by the condition of the throat. I'm not sure how much the pitting will affect accuracy as some of the most accurate rifles I have seen have had barrels worse than this. I suspect it will shoot fine for ages if its kept clean once a load has been worked up.
Obviously you will need a slot for a 30-06 barrel on your FAC to buy this. It would be perfect for someone who wants a barrel for the odd larger deer or annual driven boar trip. The target was the last group I shot with the barrel on Sunday with minimal load development.
