Hello McHugh when I visited the Blaser dealer to make a purchase there were several configurations of the R8 available on show.
All apart from one was factory fitted with a fore end stud for use with a bi pod. So not to get people mixed up this was an addition to the two factory fitted sling swivels which are at the butt end and the fore front of the stock.
I enquired as to why "that one" had no stud? Simple reply he gave me. Some people don't like or use bipods and prefer a traditional type of stalking.
Nothing wrong in that and you can only agree. Only an unreasonable person wouldn't.
So would it be unreasonable or wrong to say the R8 wasn't designed to take a bipod?

The flex occurs with very little torque when using the Harris type bipod. I think this is due to the fact of the large surface area contact being channelled into a small pin type area on top of it.
Then at the other end you have 6/9 inch legs which can only add to a type of leverage. I hope this is making sense?
I don't think the veKtor type bipods which fit directly into the front of the fore end would cause as much flex due to the fact they swivel on an end pin.

I take it your a Blaser owner then Johnboy? If my inclusion of our Paul in my posting offends you then I can only apologize.. I hope you can accept that. :D

Ah, so I'm not as queer as you then, at the moment ;-)
I've only got grade 4 timber but I have a higher grade in the pipe line so does that mean I have to change to a brighter lip stick then :D

You might find the orange lip stick useful when driven boar shooting in Europe, I think that sort of thing is traditional over there

Ok so now I understand which model you are talking about and which bipod is supposedly causing the issues. My friend has a R93 professional with an extra stud installed by the dealer for his Harris bipod and never had problems. So I'm going to make some inquiries because I haven't heard of this situation before. A R8 stock with a Harris bipod flexes the stock so much that it affects accuracy when fired from the prone position? Please correct this statement if it's wrong otherwise I'm going with it.
 
Not unusual to reinforce the forends of injection moulded stocks, blasers included. I did a few myself for customers trying to shoot competitions with 93.

There is flex in the fore end, no denying that but excessive??? what constitutes excessive.. if you deliberately go out of your way to flex it, it flexes but in use it doesn't. it has absolutely no effect on accuracy or functionality and from the block backwards it is completely rigid. The whole system acts exactly as it should.. i.e. a floating barrel system and unless you deliberately go out of your way to force it, the fore end will not come into contact with the barrel.

So... I really do fail to see your point... sure, it flexes... and??????????????????? It works... it's supremely accurate out of the box with pretty much any ammunition, made even more astonishing by the fact that one can strip it down in 30 seconds, put it back together and it is still supremely accurate, it is perfectly balanced, a joy to use and a joy to own..

Each to their own and all that but no rifle will ever tick every box for every shooter. For you, the R8 obviously doesn't tick the 'fore end must not flex' box, that's fine but that box doesn't even appear for me, it has no effect, detrimental or otherwise...

I love my Blaser.. wouldn't swap it for anything else..

The R8 comes prepped for a stud and indeed is supplied with one.. it is up to the purchaser as to whether they fit it or not. so... on that basis, I would say that IT IS designed to be used with one. Some people however, do not want a protrusion on the bottom of the fore end... its all about choice and Blaser have catered for that by giving choice.

As an aside, I use my R8 with a Harris bipod when at the range... I've never noticed any unusual flex as a result of the bipod being fitted, nor have I noticed any fall off in accuracy.

I did have a 308 R8 (the 2nd of 3 I have owned.) bought 2nd hand and then purchased a used success stock for it.. was horrible, couldn't get the groups below 4"... shots all over the place, so much flex in the fore end that you could move the barrel from one side of the channel to the other. But.. it turned out that the channel had been widened by its previous owner to take a match barrel.. it wasn't factory and that had weakened the whole thing... took it back and bought my current R8 in 6.5x55 with standard barrel.. spot on from day one and has been since..

The moral of the story... if you want a bigger barrel in your blaser, buy a factory stock designed to take it, don't try to modify a standard one.. it will damage it!
