I'm sure that I'm not the only person here with a bunion. Unfortunately I have feet shaped a bit like flippers - narrow at the heel, relatively flat and wide at the toes. Great for swimming but not so great for boots. Added to this I have a bunion on one foot which makes it wider. Currently I use the Haix surplus boots because they are broad and comfortable, but they're no longer as widely available and I'd like something a bit better (and slightly lighter) for my next boots, something that I can use for hillwalking too.
I also have a set of Meindl boots, and they fit but only just. I tried a set of Hanwag Tatra's recently and whilst they were great looking boots they were just a bit too narrow.
Any suggestions for boots that may suit me from other folk with wonky feet?

Might be worth looking at Alt-Berg's, a bit pricey , but lots of choice in sizes - also might be worth firing an enquiry to see if they can do some gentle adjustment to fit the bunions in!
On a slight tangent I've seen some real messy jobs from Bunion surgery - funnily enough not far off Mick9abf's description above! Ah ..... the sound of splintered bone as another hallux valgus bites the dust:scared:..... much better to get well fitting boots and/or insoles.

Thanks. I'll avoid all forms of surgery, especially Mick's version, if at all possible.

Have you used the Hanwag bunion version? I saw that they do a bunion version of the Tatra but wanted to avoid the expense of ordering yet another pair of boots and paying to send them back before I got some advice from someone who has actually used the boot.

No, sadly i cant give and advice on that, i know someone with bunions though and they rated them.
 
The make of boot is irrelevant really. What you need is something a size or so too small and it has to be too narrow for the foot to get into without a good shove. Get them on, lace them tightly and walk long distances across rough ground for a few weeks.

Voila ! Bunions ! :)

$580! Oucha. For that sort of money maybe Mick would just drive the deer towards me and I could wear a pair of camo crocs :)

That may well be the best option. But before buying new boots and stretching them (which may or may not work, but they won't be able to go back afterwards for sure) I thought it best to ask if there was something suitable off the shelf. Thanks.

For whatever cost Altberg will measure your feet and custom build. I suffer from the same affliction, if I've got a lot of walking to do I put a sticking plaster over the bunion, it seems to work.

You are certainly not the only one! I too have flippers and bunions 😅 so am watching with great interest. I tried the Haix and even they are too narrow for me. I got close with the Altberg, their extra wide game keeper (top of the range) are too narrow for me ...just , but may fit you. In fact how big are your feet am happy to send my pair over they are size 11 for you to try.
So I am not very helpful really as I still haven't found anything.
Wellies though, Skelerup Quatro hunting are fantastic and I live in them.

Hmm they say they do but are in fact limited as I think all other boot makers are by the sole. They use a vibram sole as do many others , vibram do not as far as I can tell make a sole wide enough for very wide feet. So sadly Altberg do not measure and make as they say when I tried they just pointed me at their widest off the shelf option which was not wide enough!

One thing you might try is varying your lacing pattern. One of my boots started to feel extra tight across my toes. I experimented wth different patterns and found one that fixed the issue. A quick Google will provide you with lacing ideas.

Might be a trek but Altberg do custom fitting at their factory in North Yorkshire. They will even make a custom made last for your feet which can be used in the future when the boots need replacing.
