Brilliant and impressive airgun for a youngster

So I have been on the hunt for an airgun for my nephew for a little bit now. He recently turned 13 and has outgrown the little junior synth stocked springer I got for him a few years back. It has done a sterling job as an introduction to rifle shooting for him but it is low on power, has an impossibly heavy trigger (which is good from a safety point of view though) and overall serves no real purpose for him now.

He is not a small 13yr old but neither is he big. Just typically at that age where the little gun is too small but adult rifles are too big. I was looking for an S200 or a BSA ultra. Something smaller and lighter so he could carry it around more easily. I found a few here and there but they were really just too nice or expensive for his needs. He is a kid so will bounce it around without meaning to, so something that I didn't care too much about was wanted.

By absolute chance, I stumbled across an advert for something called a Brocock Concept. A slightly smaller framed rifle, wooden stocked and weighing comfortably less than 6lbs. It was in really good nick, bolt tight, pellet tray looked unmarked and overall looked well. For under £200, I snapped it immediately. It sat in the corner for a couple of days as I have been busy but today I grabbed a scope from the cupboard, whacked it on, pumped it up and went out to zero it and see what an old English made airgun could produce out in the field. Well butter my ar*e, what a bloody brilliant little gun. I love the little catch/switch which releases the straight bolt. You pull it back, chuck a pellet (.22) in the tray and push it home. Nice little 2 stage trigger. Very positive and no play. Metal blade, metalwork on the bottom. Sent the first pellet home and it really cracked through the little thin ply target board I put up. Definitely got some grunt. Will stick it over the chrono over the weekend.

Quick scope adjustment to bring POI somewhere near POA and I put 25 shots down range at 35yds. It did this.

I was only using a little x4 mag scope and the light wasn't great so I didn't quite realise how plucky this little gun was until I walked up to retrieve the target. I left the target where it was and went back for more fun. Tiny little adjustment to centre POI and I put another 15 shots in to the top of the target which gave similar results

The rifle doesn't have a gauge on it, so I wanted to put 50 pellets out there to see if it would start dropping off but it didn't. The light ran out so I went home. Guessing it will do around 60 shots from a charge which is more than enough I should think. It is such a little gun that I thought it might start wimping out around the 35 shot mark but I think I will tell him to count his pellets out into batches of 50 and when he has shot them, it is time to pump it up again.

Anyway, it really is a wonderful little rifle for that inbetween age and an adult can shoot it with ease as well. He is going out more and more with the farm's little junior 20 bore, so I needed to get him something to even up the chances of him enjoying rifle shooting as well. This should do the trick. He keeps banging on about shooting a rabbit but I told him his little springer just isn't really up to it but I sense this weekend he might get himself a bunny. I will let you know how he gets on.

I had a BSA Ultra .22 which was a great wee rifle and very accurate. It was mostly used by the grandchildren who are now 9 & 6 but they found it quite difficult to reload and I did it for them.
A couple of weeks ago I traded the BSA in against a BRK Brocock Pathfinder in .177
It is a joy and so easy to use.
The grandchildren are coming to stay first week in April and having only seen pictures of the Brocock so far, they can’t wait to try it.

Great choice with the Brocock!
