I recieved some very informative replies on the other drilling thread I started and am looking to buy an as new Brno Combo U/O in the calibres above. The price is AUD1200 which is about 600 pounds, gun barely used. This will be my first combination gun.

This is the 2013 onwards model where they free floated the rifle barrel on these models and reduced overall weight to about 7lbs total. I think I will feel better dragging this through heavy cover and wet foilage after hogs than a drilling worth thousands.

I was wondering if anyone has used this model before? I know brnos are not 'fine guns' but my research indicates that as with most Brnos they are at a decent level of functionality/strength and reliability? Thanks for any thoughts though.
 
I have Brno Combo in 308/12.76
Never had any problems.
Barrels are separated and I can shoot as many bullets as I want and there will be no change of POI.
The older Brnos had rifled and shot barrel connected. I believe soldiered is english word for the procedure. But mybe I am wrong.
Because of that, only first and mybe second shot were ok. Any further shots resulted in POI climbing higher and higher.

Brno Combo is basic combination gun by today standards. Safety is just ordinary two position trigger blocking mechanism. No hand cocking.
Dovetail rail is instaled and both sights are fixed. So good scope is needed.

Here in Europe only 308, 30-06 and 8x57 callibers were available.
I am shooting 150 grains cooper bullets and it is gruping them well.

They are good solid guns. There are few up here in Scotland. Couple of friends have them in .222 /12 and they make excellent walk about rifles.

I did shoot a combination in 9.3x74r / 12 a few years ago. It was a basic one - I think a Brno but might have been a Tikka / Valmet.

I shot it on the range at running boar target and perfectly shootable. Yes there was a bit of recoil, but less than the 12 bore barrel. Just felt like I was shooting rabbit targets on the clay range.

At the prices you are talking about, snap it up along with any ammo available for it and go and hunt with it. Don’t over think it. If its only got open sights, just get a bit closer - far far more exciting.

Brno / CZ have always made goid solid working guns. They use good basic design with good steel. They may not be the fanciest or the most well finished, but they put their efforts into the important parts.

For many years big bore Brno’s were the guns of choice for African professional hunters once all the old British guns had worn out. In the UK the vast majority of 22 are Brno / CZ.

I did have the older model 500.2 12g/6,5*55 it worked well, I didnt like the set trigger for the rifle barrel. Soldered barrels, 3 bullets within 7cm at 100m with open sights (mixed ammo). I had a red dot sight on it for hunting driven game.
 
Thanks fellas. What is the vibe of a combination gun, as silly as it sounds. Are you using a double barrelled gun or two single shots. Im thinking the latter. Its one of those things I think you have to try yourself to see if it works okay. I know I can make use of it in close quarters as we shoot hogs with SxS 12ga and buckshot. If I can find a slug that gets some sort of accuracy and POI similar to the rifle at 50 yards it becomes a great buy for me

With mine I view it as a go to Rifle. Its a single shot, but just love the way it shoots and carries, and never felt at a disadvantage. Here in the UK slugs and proper buckshot need additional licensing and for a 16 bore are illegal to use on deer, so not really an option.

Most of the time its a single shot rifle, but equally its a single barreled shotgun that also handles and shoots very well. I tend to carry a few shotshells with me, and plenty of times a hunt for deer becomes a hunt for woodcock, ducks, squirrels or phaesants.

It is also a really good travelling gun as it breaks down like a shotgun. Again no need to take two guns.

Given that you can use slugs down there, that rather increase its use and it becomes a very useful double gun on closer range stuff. In longer ranges there is plenty of time to reload if a second shot is needed.
 
I used mine over and under combination guns for both hunting driven game and to just walk around to see what I can find. Driven roedeer and fallow deer with the BRNO 12g/6,5*55 once I shot one roe with bird shots us3 and one with 6,5mm bullet. With my Tikkakoski 12g/222r have I shot roe, beaver, hare, ducks, grouse both driven game and stalking.
 
I have put a slug in the shotgun barrel then tracking a wounded game. If you only are going to use rifle(slug) a doubble barrel rifle are better as a slug are not going to be better than a rifle bullet.
 
It is two guns. Decide what you are going to hunt, and load ball or shot accordingly. Only ever load one barrel unless you have a specific plan in mind.
This rarely applies. For example, with a .22 WMR / 20 ga I had, on one occasion, I loaded both barrels so as to score an under and over on rabbits: taking the first sitting and the second running. It seemed a nice challenge at the time, and I still remember it with satisfaction. I can't recall repeating the experiment on any other occasion, however.
I principally use my combination gun (and my drilling) as single-shot rifles. If I bag my deer with daylight to spare, I'll repurpose the BBF/drilling as a shotgun and wander through the woods, along the hedgerows or down to the pond in pursuit of vermin, small game, pigeons or wildfowl.

I have a brand new 8x57R one of them with their scope mount, I have yet to fire it.

Thanks for the reply.One task will be shooting wild and feral hogs where we get get both barrels going in a SxS 12ga. I'll probably use either a slug or heavy buckshot load( 12 or 15 pellets of 00/SG) in the 12ga barrel. The 9.3 barrel will do the job too and be good for the ones further out. This is the theory anyway :)

Sounds good. I tried some 12 ga slugs in a Brno 502.6 I had, and would have been happy hunting the muntjac and roe on my patch out to around 70 m with it. Legal constraints prevented me for shooting anything except targets, however.
