Buck with a broken leg and black rotten hoof

I need some help on this one as I've never come across it before. Just shot a small buck I saw struggling to walk. It had a broken back leg, above the hoof, the hoof was black, smelly and rotten. I think this was a wire related injury. The deer was small, coat in good condition, organs all look ok, full belly. Should I discard it or would it be ok to process for my own consumption?

What were the lymph nodes like?
It may be that the affected part below the break was effectively isolated from the healthy tissue above (no circulation) and was breaking down and sloughing away, in which case the remainder of the carcass should be fine. Inspection of the lymph nodes will tell you if the infection has affected the rest of its body.
Judging by your description of its condition, I should think that the rest of the carcass will be ok, but it's your decision to make.

Took a fallow pricket a couple of weeks ago with 2 broken right legs as well as the right shoulder. It was still “walking” across a corn field! Probable RTA - all lymph nodes good and the rest of the deer was in good condition. I suspect it had only happened a couple of days ago!

Good thing you caught up with that one. Probably would have slowly rotted to death in a ditch otherwise.
