Buffalo CD400 Meat Grinder/Mincer

I have had a bit of luck and picked up a Buffalo CD400 as a not working project.

I received it today and quickly figured out that the reason it wasn’t working was because someone had left the main shaft wet and it had seized. So I took the gearbox cover off and found that it was full of motor vehicle oil. And the cover had been sealed on with silicon.

So I emptied the oil, gave the whole thing a good clean so all old oil is now gone, Freed the main shaft and its back together and it’s working perfectly.

But what I don’t understand is what oil is supposed to go into the gearbox? It does not look to me like the gearbox is supposed to filled with oil like a sump so I’m assuming the filler on top of the gearbox is to allow to occasional few drops of lubricating oil.

Anyone know what oil is supposed to go into the gearbox on these and whether it is meant to be filled or just added occasionally?

I'd be inclined to use some food grade silicon lubricant. Or spray some dry-film PTFE onto the shaft at regular intervals.

Great find, by the way! :thumb:

Would a few drops of vegetable oil do it? Just enough to wet its whistle.

It’s a bit strange, I’ve looked at the exploded parts diagram and there doesn’t seem to be an oil seal between the motor body and gearbox housing which suggests it isn’t a sump type arrangement but then I read forums where people mention oil leaks which suggests it is an oil sump.

But I have googled what oil is used and nothing comes up....plus I found a pdf of the instruction manual And again no mention of oil?
