I'm thinking of buying the Caldwell precision ballistic chronograph, any opinions views on this equipment would be welcomed.

I'm only interested in a basic chrono, I see that Caldwell have a G2 model which is a lot dearer, worth the extra money?

Thanks for any/all replies.

There ok sort of
The phone app and connection is selective at best I’ve got one and it works well apart from the app

Thanks to you both for replies.
Has any member a recommendation for a similar priced chrono?

I'd seriously recommend looking at a Magnetospeed or a radar based chrono. The optical chrono's are not as accurate, and are losing their value quickly as more and more radar based ones enter the market (like Garmin's new one).

While they can be more expensive, long term, they're going to maintain their value and are less finicky than the optical ones. The Magnetospeed Sporter version is not much more than an optical chrono these days.

JMTCW...

I’ve got one and as has already been said app and phone connection not the best but otherwise works very well requires the lighting kit for best results I only use it for developing loads and for that task it’s great if I needed it for more range use I’d probably gone magnetospeed

I have one and the interface between chrono, phone & app is utter sh*te. It works some of the time or none of the time, I don’t think I’ve managed to record a whole 5 shot string since I bought it.

It would seem that with out paying for a super dooper chrono, the use and results etc can be a bit iffish.

Not sure where I go from here, I only need a chrono for basic load development, so will have to ponder on what to get.

HaHa... I've been pondering that self-same question.. for exactly the same reasons when you only need it for a very short while maybe buy a decent 2nd hand unit then sell it on again when you have the results you're looking for.

Buy it
If it’s a good price as I said they work fine just write down your speeds then calculate everything from there don’t worry about the app if you’ve an older type iPhone say iPhone 5 the app seams to work ok.
Think I paid around £60 when I bought it it’s worked for me

Update, have just tried mine with my new phone (iPhone 15) using a genuine Apple 3.5mm jack socket to USB C adapter and it works perfectly if I follow the below sequence.

1. Plug one end of the supplied jack cable into the chrono jack socket and the other into the USB adapter.
2. Switch on the chrono.
3. Open the app on the phone.
4. Plug in the USB C adapter to the phone and wait a few seconds for it to recognise it.

The volume on the phone needs to be on full and if prompted, select headphones for the USB port.

Interesting I’ll give this a go
Does it register the shot strings on the phone?
Mine connects ok with the same genuine apple cable but doesn’t transfer the information too my phone
iPhone 11.

It does, however my previous phone has just died and that was an iPhone 11 and never seemed to work using a 3.5mm jack to lightning adapter.

Avoid like the plague.

All these optical chronygraph are notoriously unreliable. In as much as the reading you get is dependent on the light conditions. You can never be sure you are getting a true measurement.

They also end up getting shot.

That is why the Magnetospeed came into existence and is very popular.
