Hi guys some advice needed sorry if this has been covered loads of times. I’ve got a 308 on my ticket but it’s only got a 18” barrel shooting heavy rounds makes it really slow I’m looking for a flatter shooting cartridge that will push a heavy round for sika and red and the odd pig without the massive recoil was thinking 7mm prc is anyone using this particular calibre cause I have some real world opinions please. Thanks for any help.

9.3 x 62, I have shot Roe with the same load as shooting pigs, 220 grain Lapua Naturalis, Roe isn't damaged beyond any other round / load, pretty sure any Sika / Red wouldn't be shrugging that load off either.:norty:

Used a 9.3 myself for roe and reds. Lovely, but excessive feeding cost, recoil and blast for what’s needed IMHO. If we had actual wild boar where I stalk, it would be back in the cupboard.

I think what the OP is looking for is a 30-06.

7PRC is very cool, but absolutely unnecessary power wise for reds and sika.

If you re reloading you can take your pick of a numerous cartridges. My current choice being 30-06. I could get a 9.3x62 barrel for my 202 but would need another mag too. The other reason I can load to 308 or less level with 110 to 220 grain bullets reasonably easy to get. Both lead core and lead free. What’s not to like.
I do however have other barrels in different chambering’s with loads to suit. The 30-06 is for bigger deer and boar.

Try 130gr class decent BC monolithic bullets in your 308 before venturing to other options.

People like 130gr TTSX, and educated guess says the velocity would be 2750-2800fps with published data.

6.5 prc seems to fit the bill.

I know a chap that uses 257 wetherby mag for all of the above species to great effect.

If you are set on 7mm then the 7 rem mag will have cheaper ammo than the prc.

Buy the lightest copper Barnes tTSX you can get for the 308, use a slightly faster powder ( thinking CFE ) But you will need to look into burn rates . Sika and Reds will drop dead with a lighter than the old 100 grain minimum from a .243 win ( fact not a guess ) just keep it in the hart / Lungs! I am not guessing btw . I Now shoot .260 rem with 100 grain tTSX copper with a fast twist and it will kill very well to 300 plus ( which is twice as much as the majority should shoot to ) Not guessing your skill just saying it as it is .

Any of our legal deer rifles shoot pretty much the trajectory needed to kill at 300 yards . Indeed the .243 win is pretty good trajectory wise ( i shot one with 100 grain lead for years through it ) including my big Bowland Gold Medal stag with the load .

If you are talking “need” then strictly between we SD Johnnies your .308 will drop anything on this corner of God’s green earth. However if we are talking “want” a 300 Norma magnum must be up there.
Ooooo, 4,000 ft lbs of energy……. I’ve come over all giddy just typing it….

18” .308 is my main deer rifle. I shoot 125 Osprey, 130 Barnes TTSX and Fox 130 classic hunter - they all shoot around 2900 fps and are interchangeable in terms of zero. N135 gives me the best results. I’ve got flatter shooting chamberings but I love this .308 combo.
Try it, you might not need to get a new rifle after all.

Get whatever your heart desires but it won’t kill any more deer more dead than your .308 will even with a short barrel. That’s the actual truth
